Marina di Castagneto Carducci
MARINA DI CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI is located in the Etruscan Coast, that is a long narrow stretch of coastline along Tuscany's coast that goes from Livorno to Piombino and includes parts of four internal city areas: Collesalvetti, Sassetta, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima.
The name of this beautiful coastal area is tied to the presence of the Etruscan civilization that inhabited this area from the start of the 9th century BC (way before the Romans), as so many archeological sites deminstrate today.
At the Archeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, in the Gulf of Baratti between San Vincenzo and Piombino, you can nowadays visit one of the most important sites, including a large necropolis, in this area left by the ancient Etruscans. Don't miss to visit Populonia Alta, a wonderful tiny hamlet, built up on a hill faced of the Gulf of Baratti, which is the first and unique coastal village built by Etruscans.
The Etruscan Coast also includes the archeological and natural areas of the Parks of the Val di Cornia, to which the Archeological Park of Baratti and Populonia as well as the Coastal Parks of Rimigliano amd of the Sterpaia are part of.
In June the main cities of the Etruscan Coast celebrate the arrival of Summer in a special Blue Night which provides with parties, concerts, shows and several cultural and food and wine events.
CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI is one of the most popular towns on the Etruscan Coast.
Perched on a hillside less than 10 km from the sea, the city center of Castagneto has grown around an imposing medieval castle (used nowadays as a setting for events and parties) located on the hilltop. The city was called "Castagneto Marittima" until the beginning of 1900s when its name was changed to "Castagneto Carducci" in honor of Giosuè Carducci, one of the greatest Italian poets of the XIX century who spent part of his childhood here. The village today is a peaceful holiday destination, coming alive particularly during the summer and it is a very welcoming place. With its small center made of narrow streets, beautiful squares and shops, Castagneto Carducci is a human-size town.
BOLGHERI with its old historical center, the typical houses of stone and bricks, rich food and wine shops, small restaurants and taverns, is really an enchanting village. The village itself is as precious as it is small. It is perfect for a short visit, but I strongly recommend you take your time to fully enjoy its atmosphere. We definetly suggest a drive along the famous Viale dei Cipressi (Cypress Avenue) that leads to Bolgheri. This is a scenic, straight avenue, about 5 km long, bordered by majestic and ancient cypresses which end in front of the castle of Bolgheri. It connects the old Via Aurelia to the village. Proceeding along the avenue and behind the cypresses, you'll start to see the red bricks of Bolgheri's castle. The hamlet is located over this elegant castle, so beautiful and finished that it seems to come straight out of a storybook for children. It is an ideal spot for a pleasant walk browsing through its shops plenty of food and local specialties, its nice alleys, enjoying a good snack or a drink in one of the wine shops. Every year between July and August the Bolgheri Melody Festival takes place, a festival full of great musical events, theater and dance. Most events take place in a large arena located at the beginning of the long avenue of cypresses leading to Bolgheri.
The vineyards of the Etruscan Coast produce prestigious wines. In the Bolgheri area and its surroundings, some of the best Tuscan wines renowned around the world are produced. The Super Tuscan Sassicaia, produced by Tenuta San Guido, is probably the most famous (and expensive) as it's considered one of the finest Italian red wines. Then there are the excellent Bolgheri Superiore, Bolgheri Rosso, and Ornellaia among red wines, and the Vermentino Bolgheri and Bolgheri Bianco among the white wines. Over thirty local wine estates are members of the consortium Bolgheri DOC, which guarantees the highest quality products.
