The Castries region
To the north of Marigot Bay lies St Lucia’s capital, Castries. Little of the historical architecture remains but don’t miss a visit to the colourful Central Market, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Derek Walcott Square, and Morne Fortune which played an important part in the island’s military history. For duty free shopping visit Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenageor local shops in the Marina Village.
A short drive north of Castries brings you to the main tourist areas of Gros Islet (famous for its ‘Friday Night Jump Up) and Rodney Bay with their vast array of shops, hotels, restaurants, and the famous Reduit Beach. Pigeon Island National Historic Park, joined to Gros Islet by a causeway, is one of St Lucia’s most popular relaxation spots and site of the famous St Lucia Jazz Festival held in May each year. 3km further on from Gros Islet you reach the St Lucia Golf and Country Club on Cap Estate, one of the most challenging and scenic golf courses in the Caribbean. For the cricket enthusiast, the Beausejour Cricket ground where a number of the 2007 World Cup matches were played is not too far away.
From Castries there is nothing more spectacular than the drive south along the west coast road with its fabulous scenery and of course, Marigot Bay. Visit the small fishing village of Anse La Raye with its Friday night fish fry, the larger fishing village of Canaries and of course Soufrière with views of the volcanic cones of Gros and Petit Pitons which dominate the horizon. Here you will also find a number of other attractions, including the Sulphur Springs, Diamond Falls, Botanical Gardens, Mineral Baths, Fond Doux Estate and the romantic Anse Chastanet Beach.
Marigot Bay area
Marigot Bay has been described by novelist James A Michener as "the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean”. It is one of the most memorable places on this beautiful island and is loved by visitors and St. Lucians alike. The bay has provided a safe haven for yachts over the centuries and the marina docks at Discovery provide for visiting luxury sailing and motor yachts.
The Resort has a wide range of restaurants and bars. The Boudreau Restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner is relaxed during the day and more formal in the evenings, whilst the Rainforest Hideaway, a two minute ferry ride across the bay, is the ultimate fine dining retreat with a gentle jazz ambience, tropical blossoms, vines and fairy lights. It is situated on its own dock over the water and serves fusion cuisine, champagne and sophisticated cocktails.
The lively Hurricane Hole Bar, famous among yachtsmen worldwide with a panoramic view of the bay, has been restored to its former glory with its original lighting and signage. Lunch and dinner are served here. The swim up bar in the main hotel pool also serves light snacks.
The Lapli Spa has three treatment rooms with private decks and private open air showers, a Vichy wet room and, in the garden, two ofurus (wooden soaking tubs) and two double massage cabanas. There is a separate beauty parlour for hairdressing, pedicures and manicures. The fitness centre is located here.
The ferry takes guests to the famous sandspit where you can sunbathe, swim, snorkel and experience a variety of complimentary non-motorised water sports. Elsewhere around the bay there are a number of other small bars and restaurants where you can enjoy relaxed meals and entertainment. Check with the concierge for up to date information.
Next door to the Discovery Resort is The Marina Village. This picturesque little Caribbean style courtyard has a full range of facilities including a bank with 24 hour ATM, shops, bakery and café bar with views over the bay. The Marina has yachts available for charter to the Grenadines and beyond.
Two of the biggest events in the entertainment calendar are the St Lucia Jazz Festival held during May and July's Carnival celebrated with music, dance and parades.
