Home description
Situated in the beautiful and peaceful Hochkönig valley, the apartment is away from main thoroughfares and traffic noise, without being remote. In a small chalet with just two other apartments in the building, the apartment is airy, spacious and comfortable, with a woodburner for cosy evenings after a day's ski-ing. A beautiful traditional Austrian restaurant provides a warm welcome and very reasonably priced meals a few minutes walk away. The amenities of picturesque Maria Alm are 5 minutes' drive away.
In winter the windows look out over a winter wonderland, with easy access to ski slopes that have not yet been discovered by tour operators so there are rarely any queues. The Daily Telegraph ski supplement described the area as "an intermediates’ paradise, with run after run after run. Also great for families, with small resorts and lots of uncrowded beginner areas.” It is also a wonderful location for Alpine summer holidays, with lots to see and do - or to just relax on the balcony, drinking in the view whilst listening to cow bells and the rustle of larch trees.

The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
The extensive ski area of Hochkönigs Winterreich has 39 lifts and 150 km of ski slopes from Maria Alm to Mühlbach. The ski slopes are overlooked by the craggy 3000m summit of the Hochkönig, giving the area one of the longest ski seasons in Austria, from mid-December to mid April.
With average summer temperatures of 23 degrees, the region is perfect for Alpine summer holidays in an area of great beauty and tranquility. The beautiful medieval and baroque city of Salzburg is an hour away, easily reached by car or public transport. Luxurious thermal spas, ice caves, salt mines, rafting and the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak, are all within easy reach.
Maria Alm / Hintermoos area
The local area offers wonderful ski-ing for skiers of all levels. A ski run passes immediately behind the chalet, linking to a vast and uncrowded ski area with hardly any queues and lots of traditional and relatively inexpensive restaurants on the slopes. Beginners have a choice of nursery slopes easily accessible by car or shuttle bus.
The nearest supermarket, shops and banks are in Maria Alm, a 5 minute drive by car or shuttle bus. Maria Alm is a picturesque and unspoilt village, which is a delight to visit in both winter and summer, with small shops, cafes and a baroque church known for its soaring spire. In summer the window boxes are a riot of geraniums.
Hintermoos is a wonderful place to be in late spring, summer or early Autumn, with lots of opportunities locally for walking, swimming, cycling, mountain biking, water activities, summer sledging and experiencing the mountains by cablecar and chair lift as well as foot.
Maria Alm has a lovely open air pool with a flume surrounded by grass. Our favourite for swimming is the lake at Saalfelden, which is surprisingly warm, has a large grassy area for relaxing and wonderful views of the mountains as you swim.
There are lots of stunning walks for all levels of fitness and enthusiasm around Hintermoos. There are local maps with walking trails in the apartment which you are welcome to use. Taking a chair lift up and walking down is also an option!
