The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Salzburg is one of the smaller Austrian provinces but it is one of the most important for the tourism industry, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors all year round. Salzburgland offers unspoilt countryside with unique natural attractions such as the Hohe Tauern National Park. It boast some of the world's best skiing and snowboarding in winter as well as water sports, golf, cycling and walking in the summer.
The city of Salzburg is the birthplace of Wolfgang Mozart and is a Baroque fiesta of churches, plazas, courtyards and fountains. Museums, houses, squares, chocolate bars and liqueurs are all part of one giant homage to the great composer.
Maria Alm / Hintermoos area
Less than 70 kms south of Salzburg, the apartment is in Hintermoos, a suburb of Maria Alm which is one hour's drive from Salzburg airport. Maria Alm is one of three villages that comprise the Hochkoenig's Winter Kingdom. The others include Dienten and Muehlbach. The immediate area has 39 lifts that serve 150 kilometers of groomed slopes. All you need is one ski pass to avail of 276 lifts in the surrounding area, offering access ot over 1,500 kilometers of slopes. Everything from nursery to super blacks, to extensive off-piste skiing and snowboarding.
Winter activities include snowboarding, off-piste, cross country skiing, ice skating, tobogganing, sleigh rides, and winter walks. Also available nearby is bowling, swimming, sauna, and a sports hall. The skiing region stretches across Maria Alm, Aberg, Hintermoos, Hinterthal as far as Dienten and Mühlbach am Hochkönig. Nearby is Zell am See, a spa, an international winter sport resort and a beautiful holiday region.
The village of Maria Alm itself has won awards for being the most beautiful village in the region. The ski area stretches from Saalfelden via Maria Alm, Aberg, Hintermoos and Hinterthal, on as far as Dienten and then to Muhlbach am Hochkonig. A free ski bus links Hintermoos with Hinterthal which opens up a vast ski area around Dienten and Muhlbach for all grades of skier.
How to get there
Ryanair, Thompsonfly, fly into Salzburg daily. Aer Lingus also offers regular service from the middle of December to April. Other airlines fly to Innsbruck, about a 2 hour drive away.
Easyjet fly to Munich, about 4 hour drive - www.easyjet.com Maria Alm is approx. 70 kilometres south of Salzburg, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car.
Car hire available from Avis, Budget, Herz, Europocar at the airport. Two taxi services operate from Salzburg to Maria Alm for about 110 euros. During the day buses and trains run between the airport and Saalfelden, the next town. Regular buses from Saalfelden to Maria Alm.
Maria Alm is about a 12 hour drive from Calais.

Further details indoors: Inside, all traditional Austrian style furniture, hand crafted, Austrian log fire, with traditional tiled front. Keeps going all day and night with just a few logs. also full central heating system. Off the main living area there is a two sided large balcony, giving lovely views of the countryside and mountains. There is another smaller balcony off the master bedroom. Accommodation will suit 7 or perhaps eight. Master bedroom is quite large and could easily accommodate a child's cot. Also separate bedroom has double bunks, ie. double bed on bottom and single bunk over, all handcrafted in Austrian pine. There is another loft-style bedroom with its own separate stairs off the main stairway. This conservatively accommodates two people but could accommodate 3 young children. There is a communal ski deposit on the ground floor as well as laundry and drying room. Linen provided at extra cost.
Further details outdoors: Parking directly outside the house. There is an enclosed dust-bin area nearby for putting out rubbish, which is separated. There is a hotel and sports leisure centre within a few minute's walk of the apartment as well as restaurants nearby. The village of Maria Alm is a few minute's drive away .
