The Austrian Alps region
Salzburgland, the province within which Maria Alm lies, offers picture postcard scenery with stunning natural attractions, such as the Hohe Tauern National Park, the highest waterfalls in Europe at Krimml and the breathtaking lake at Zell am Zee. It has a wide range of activities and attractions for both the winter and summer months.
For winter sport enthusiasts, the vast regional Ski Amadé area (25 villages, 860km of trails and 258 lifts on one ski pass) incorporates the local Hochkönig Winter Kingdom ski area, of which Maria Alm is a part. The local slopes are quiet and chairlift queues are almost non-existent. Hinterthal has one of the best snow records in Austria, with the lifts usually opening in late November. For information on the Hochkönig ski area, visit www.hochkoenig.at/en and, for the wider Ski Amadé region, go to www.skiamade.com/en/
Some 25 minutes' drive from Maria Alm is the fantastic 3,000-metre Kitzsteinhorn glacier, near Kaprun, which provides all-year round skiing with about 40 slopes and 20 lifts. This was the first ski area in Austria too and so it has a sound pedigree. It also offers a variety of other attractions in the summer months. For more information, see: en.kitzsteinhorn.at/
For other seasons across the region as a whole, there are many activities for adults and children alike, including walking, mountain biking, golf (there is an 18-hole course just behind the apartment), mini golf, tennis and water sports.
Leogang is 15 minutes' drive from the apartment and boasts the biggest mountain bike park in Europe. Indeed, it hosted the 2012 world championships. For more information on events in this area, visit: http://www.saalfelden-leogang.com/en/
Maria Alm lies at the end of the Mühlbachtal valley against the backdrop of the high Steinernes Meer plateau and Hochkönig mountain, whose peaks rise to over 3,000 metres.
Maria Alm and the neighbouring mountain villages of Hintermoos and Hinterthal are easily reached by motorway from Salzburg.
Maria Alm is lively and pretty both summer and winter and is a great resort for families.
There are several ski-runs down to the village itself. And just down the road there is the opportunity for extensive skiing, since Dienten, Mühlbach and Hinterthal are all on the same ski pass for the Hochkönig ski area, with its 150 kilometres of fantastic ski slopes. For those prepared to explore a bit further, these resorts are all part of the vast, world-class Ski Amadé region.
Cross-country skiers will find 30 km of marked trails locally. And non-skiers are well catered for with curling, winter walks, sleigh rides, flood-lit toboggan runs and ice-skating.
The area is a fantastic base for summer holidays.
Activities include: outdoor pool and fitness centre, mountain-biking, championship 18-hole golf course near the apartment, summer skiing, windsurfing and sailing — or just plain old balcony sunbathing!
Enjoy the neighbouring traditional town of Saalfelden with its variety of local shops and typical Austrian hospitality.
Near Saalfelden, the Bikepark Leogang has developed into one of the most renowned bike-parks in Europe, and the area Saalfelden Leogang is a “must do” for everyone passionate about biking. It is hardly surprising that Saalfelden Leogang hosted the Union Cycliste Internationale Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in 2012 (15 minutes' drive from the apartment).
Maria Alm is a wonderful ski area, with its neighbour Hinterthal and other villages of Dienten and Mühlbach, all of which can be skied on with the same lift pass. You really get a feeling here of skiing from resort to resort. The snow usually falls here first, with Hinterthal having one of the best snow records in Austria and opening its lifts in late-November.
The local indoor swimming pool is only a ten-minute walk away and is open all year round. The water park is open in the summer months only and is located about a 20-minute walk or a short drive away. Other local facilities available include: public sauna, fitness centre, tennis and massage. The area immediately around the apartments is superb for walking, hiking and mountain-biking.
Public transport is available in the road opposite the apartment. This provides easy access to the whole area throughout the year.
