The Kwa Zulu Natal region

The Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu Natal is one of the most beautiful coastlines. South beyond Ramsgate, the coast becomes more secluded and well-wooded and more secluded 'hide-away' destinations take prominence. Marina Beach is the next bay along, another tree-filled slice of secluded paradise, overlooking a tidal pool and sweeping long stretch of golden beach. The beach is a great site for kite surfing, and the top manufacturer of high performance kites was situated here for many years.

Climate:
The weather is sub-tropical and less hot and humid than the Northern KZN coast and Durban, making it more pleasant in summer and cooler in winter, though it is still delightfully warm compared with Gauteng and the Eastern and Western Cape. In summer all you need is a bathing costume and sarong most days (plus sunscreen) and in winter, a light cardigan over casual clothes is usually enough in the evenings. Occasional cold snaps in winter may need an extra blanket at night, but the cottage itself has an open fireplace if you want a cosy evening by the fireside. Although the KZN South Coast is usually sunny, it's always a good idea to take a raincoat or rainproof anorak. Smart casual dress is required at some restaurants.

History:
There are a number of interesting sites to visit to learn more about the history of the Hibiscus Coast. Albersville Community Church, the Assisi Convent, Batstone's Drift, Fynn's Grave and the German Church and Bazley's Harbour Works are interesting historical sites in Port Shepstone, still relatively unknown. 15kms upstream from Port Shepstone is the farm awarded to Dick King's partner Ndongeni ka Zoki, after the famour ride in 1842. His grave is on his farm. The Port Shepstone lighthouse, made of iron, was cast in Britain and shipped to Natal in the 1890's. It's a national monument.

Nature:
Marina Beach's beautiful subtropical setting is an ideal base for exploring nature. A marine reserve and a number of nature reserves give you an opportunity to study bird, fish, animal and plant life. Lots of nature rambles and walks invite the holiday maker as well as hiker to explore and enjoy the wild. There are many beaches and lagoons to visit, and miles of beach for sunset and sunrise walks. This stretch of the warm Indian Ocean presents the year-round delight of frolicking dolphins and majestic cruising whales. The sardine run in June/July is one of nature's truly grand spectacles.

Margate Kwa Zulu Natal / San Lameer area

June is the time to start whale watching. Humpback whales move past Marina Beach on their way to the warmer waters of Mozambique where they mate and calve. Bring your binoculars. Throughout the year there are pods fo 30 - 50 bottlenose dolphines that patrol up and down the coast and play just beyond the breakers.

Marina Beach is a peaceful and quiet village with beaches that are perfect for beach strolls and whale and ship watching. They are also safe for swimming with lifeguards on duty in season, and you can fish off the rocks. Margate is fifteen minutes' drive from Marina Beach. It's a popular holiday resort, full of restaurants, shops and hotels. There is always something to do in Margate if you are looking for entertainment, and it is often packed out in the local holiday season.

There is a little general store where you can buy necessities, but generally it's a good idea to drive to Shelly Beach and shop at Shelly Centre, which also has a range of restaurants and cinemas. Good dining and lovely beaches are also found at Ramsgate and Southbroom, the northern neighbours of Marina Beach.

Golf:
For golfers, Marina Beach is ideally situated. Just south of Marina Beach, San Lameer has a hotel, restaurant and art gallery, plus a Platinum world class golf course. Southbroom Golf Club is Silver rated. Excellent golf courses are found at Margate Country Club, Port Shepstone Country Club and another platinum world class golf club is 15 minute's drive south at the Wild Coast Golf Club a total of five top golf courses.

Art and crafts:
San Lameer has a fine art gallery specialising in latest works of South Africa's most prominent and established artists as well as a range of handcrafts, ceramics and jewellery. Trafalgar has a good Arts and Crafts shop. Then there is Riverbend Art Gallery, on the way to Ramsgate. There is also the Southern Explorer Craft Route, which includes pottery, carvings, art and handcrafts.

Nature:
Along the Marina Beach, you reach the two kilometres of Marine Reserve beach, where just offshore, 90 million year old fossil beds are afforded invaluable protection and provide endless snorkelling pleasure. The coastal formation provides ideal sail-boarding conditions off the main beach. A little further south, the Mpenjati River Estuary is flanked by a nature reserve with visitor-friendly walking paths. You could see shy forest antelope, fish eagles bushbuck, blue and grey duiker, and a long list of abundant bird species.

How to get there

Durban International Airport is situated 16 kilometres from downtown Durban. The airport handles about 2.4 million passengers and almost 13.2 tons of cargo annually. It is the gateway to the golden beaches, game parks, mountains and rolling green countryside of KwaZulu natal. Banking: Located on the Ground Floor, International Arrivals and Departures. Open during arrival and departure of International flights.
Tourist Info Kiosk offers visitors up-to-the-minute information on events, attractions and services in the province. It also offers fax-on-demand, Internet facilities and instant access to accommodation and sight seeing tours for tourists. Location: Arrivals Terminal.

Car hire can be organised at the airport, but it is advisable to confirm car hire arrangements before your trip. Marina Beach is 80 minutes' drive from Durban, down the N2 freeway along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The national road runs parallel with the coast and there are wonderful views of sea, surf and tropical vegetation, banana and sugar cane plantations, and numerous rivers joining the sea with lagoons and golden beaches. There are also rural African villages and friendly people. After passing Port Shepstone, you pass Margate, Ramsgate and Southbroom. After Southbroom the next village is Marina Beach, just before San Lameer. Follow George Pontutti Drive to the sea, and turn left at Ocean View Drive.

A visit to Marina Beach can be a holiday break all on its own, or part of a tour of the South African coast, on your way to the Transkei, Southern Cape and Cape Town.
