The Paphos District
Cyprus is known as the birth place of Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans), the goddess of love. It is the third largest Mediterranean island and is situated in its North-eastern corner, due South of Turkey It is almost 100 miles East-West and up to 40 miles North/South in size. Since 1974, the island has been divided into two parts, with Turkey occupying just over one third of it to the North. Paphos is situated in the Greek Cypriot part, with English being widely spoken and they even drive on the same side of the road as we do. The Greek Cypriots are very friendly and helpful people and the crime rate is extremely low, at only one-sixth of the European average. Most importantly, Cyprus boasts the warmest climate of all the islands in the Mediterranean, averaging only thirty days of rain each year, nearly all of it in the winter months. The island has a mild climate in the winter, is very warm in the spring and autumn and can be extremely hot in July and August. There are approximately 3/4 of a million inhabitants on the island and Nicosia, towards the centre, is the capital with nearly 1/4 of a million people.
Please note their is now a local bus service from Paphos airport nearest bus stop from property being approx 4 mins walk away, please email for bus times, prices are eur1 adult and eur1 child each way as at 2014.
Kato Paphos is the harbour and tourist area of Paphos and was the ancient Roman capital of the island. The town is full of inexpensive restaurants, bars and clubs etc. to suit all tastes and budgets. Margarita Gardens is located in a sought after area in the heart of Kato Paphos just a few minutes walk from tavernas, supermarkets , 10 minutes walk to the Harbour and 7 minutes or less to the Blue flag municipal beach. The whole town is included on UNESCO'S World Heritage Cultural List due to the richness of its archaeological sites. These include the famous Roman mosaics, the ancient Byzantine fort, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Tombs of the Kings and many historical churches etc. Ayia Kyriaki church is just a 5 minutes walk away. Also nearby are the Paphos Aquarium, Water Park, Go-Kart track and a good selection of shops. Also worth a visit is Ermes , which is more like a small Debenhams and is a good place to get coffee, snacks and even meals, whilst enjoying a general view of the harbour. Several boat trips also sail from Paphos harbour and Latchi, which is in the North. The main town of Paphos has an attractive hilly backdrop and contains a large market, cinemas, Ten Pin bowling alley, museums and many more shops. There are also two golf courses nearby and even a ski resort in the Troodos Mountains, which is just over an hours drive away. In short, you will not run out of things to do.
If music be the food of love then read on, as Paphos is the resort for you. The one time capital of Cyprus, Paphos is full of interesting artefacts, cafes and restaurants, as well as bars, discos and plush hotels. It is now divided into two quarters, each one as interesting and as exciting as the other - Ktima for those who like to shop and embrace local culture and ancient history; and the port of Kato Pafos where you can eat, drink, make new friends and watch the boats come in and out until sunset. A beautiful resort with beaches to match, that is suited to anyone and everyone. Transfer time from Paphos airport is approximately 20 minutes.
The number activities that can be enjoyed in and around the Paphos area are endless, from spending time on the beach, to walks along the coast or up in the mountains, bird watching, or looking at the numerous historical sites found all over the Island.
There is so much to do in Paphos, these include Sandy Beaches, Waterparks, Fair Grounds, Go Carting, Golf nad Mini Golf, Boat Trips, Safari Trips, Zoo's,, WaterSports, Horseriding, The list is endless...
Not unsurprisingly on a Island full of resorts, Cyprus has plenty of places where you can enjoy water sports. There's also at least one diving site in each of the big resorts. Mountain biking and hiking are possible, with specially marked trails, on the Akamas Peninsula and in the Troödos, where also in winter Cyprus' only ski resort can be found on the north-eastern face of Mount Olympus. Plus, what Mediterranean resort these days would not be without a golf course or two - there are several courses that have been completed or under construction, with the most popular in the Paphos district, being located at Tsada not too far from the apartment.
There are a number of businesses based in and around the Paphos Harbour area, that offer water sports and other water based activities, such as glass bottom boat trips, details of which will be in the house.
