The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
The Vendée is perfect for making many trips and for many activities. The beaches are close by, but also the Venise Vert, an area consisting of green polders with numerous canals. You can take boattrips if you choose, but it is also a lovely place for walking or cycling. The sandy beaches and ocean of the Vendée are known for their child safety. The bottom of the sea slopes very slowly and there are practically no currents. The Warm Gulfstream makes the climate very pleasant, even in Autumn, Winter and Spring. On some beaches you can find rockpools, which keep children amused for hours, searching for crabs and shells. Next to the Cote d'Azur, the Vendee is the second sunniest area in France.
Mareuil sur Lay area
Mareuil-sur-Lay is the heart of a small but very good wine area, the Fiefs Vendéens. There is a wineroute. In Mareuil you will find facilities such as doctors, pharmacies, vets, bakery shops, butchers, a supermarket etc. Luçon, 8 km south and has a nice centre and a beautiful cathedral that was built in the 12th - 14th century, attached to the Benedictine convent, that was built in the 7th century. Cardinal Richelieu (known from "The three Musketeers") was bishop here from 1606 to 1623. Le Jardin Dumaine is also definitely worth a visit. La Roche-sur-Yon: this town was founded in 1804 by Napoleon. It is also the capital of the Vendée. It has several (large) supermarkets, a hospital and of course other shops. There are numerous restaurants and bars, 2 covered swimming-pools, an ice-rink, etc. Other sights are: La Rochelle, Ile de Re, castles, zoos, aquarium, Marais Poitevin, Puy de Fou etc.
