The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
The area has as many hours of sunshine as the south of France. To the south there are the flat fen lands of the Marais Poiteven a haven for marsh wild life and birds, and where the famous green Venice and pretty towns of Coulon and Vix can be visited. Close by the countryside becomes small rolling hills covered in vines for the local and little known Mareuil label wines. To the West are the golden Atlantic beaches stretching for miles behind forests of pines. The historic towns of La Rochelle and Fontenay Le Compte can be visited, and the newer towns of Les Sables d'Olonne and La Roche Sur You.
Mareuil sur Lay area
Visit Le Puy Du Fou, Futuroscope, the Aquarium at La Rochelle, Atlantic Water Park or the Museum of Motoring. Visit the local vineyards to sample the wines of the area. Enjoy the local markets and fairs. You can eat out in many local restaurents where a three course meal including wine is less that 12 euros.
How to get there
You can reach us by flying from Stanstead or East Midlands airports to Nantes or La Rochelle with Ryanair, or in summer from Southampton or Birmingham to La Rochelle with Flybee. We have a discout arrangement with Brittany Ferries for cross channel ferries, which run from Portsmouth to Cherbourg, Caen and St Malo, or Plymouth to Roscoff. Short channel crossings to Calais, Le Havre and Boulogne are linked to our area by very good uncrowded road networks.
