Elba is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and is also part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago. It is located in the Thyrrhenian Sea, only 10 km away from the Italian mainland. With a surface area of 224 km2 it is the third largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia.

The island of Elba is also famous for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. The climate of the island is predominantly Mediterranean. Thanks to the exceptionally mild climate, varied coastline, extending over 147 km, and the majestic beauty of the Capanne mountains (1019m) it has become an internationally renowned tourist center, suitable for different types of tourism: a tourism for young people interested in the nightlife and trendy beaches, but also a tourism looking for relax and oriented to families reception. In the setting of a crystalline sea and golden sand beaches, green gulfs and secret or sheer granite rocks standing out from the bush, shady forests, mountains, flat countryside and sun-drenched fields, a variety of different landscapes: from the romantic fishing villages to the villages in the hills of green valleys. The vegetation on Elba is generous in terms of colour, perfume and shades of light. On Elba there are more than 70 beaches, all very different from each other. Elba has a lot of activities for nature lovers and outdoor sports. Among the most appreciated sports, there is diving, snorkeling and sailing.

Portoferraio is the capital of the island of Elba and the cultural and economic center. The port town is located in the north of the island on a cliff which reaches far eastward into the sea, thus forming a natural bay. Portoferraio is the main terminus of the pier and ferry connections to the Italian mainland . The name " Portoferraio " means " iron port", due to the ancient iron mining activity on Elba. Through the Porta del Mare (Gate of the Sea) at the port you enter the old town of Portoferraio. Directly behind the gate, the main square Piazza Cavour stretches with numerous small boutiques and cafes that invite you to stroll, shop and relax. At the eastern end of the town perched on a rocky spur the star-shaped Forte Stella. Portoferraio can refer to many cultural attractions and natural beauties . The old town looks like a fortress. At the end of the old harbor basin there is the tower Linguella which now hosts art exhibitions and expositions.
