The Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region

The Gers is a beautiful, unspoilt and scarcely populated area of France, enjoying hot summers and warm spring and autumn. It is one of the most agricultural areas of France, untouched by heavy industry and mass tourism.
Amidst the breathtaking scenery with fields of sunflowers and wooded hills is an abundance of wildlife - eagles, buzzards, owls, woodpeckers, deer and wild boar can regularly be seen.
Formerly known as Gascony, the area is rich in history with an abundance of historic towns, chateaux and bastide villages with donjons (fortified towers) to explore. The larger towns of Auch with its cathedral and statue of d'Artagnan, Agen, Condom and Pau are all within easy reach.
The area is well known for its culinary specialities, duck, foie gras, armagnac and the local wines of St Mont and Madiran feature strongly on the menus.
The Marciac area
Marciac is an attractive small market town set around a beautiful old square with restaurants, cafes and shops. It comes to life in August when it hosts the largest jazz festival in Europe attracting music lovers from around the world. There is also a country & western music festival in Mirande and a tempo Latino music festival in Vic Fezensac. There are many local lively markets, and even the smallest villages host fetes in the summer with communal meals and entertainment.
There are several local lakes with beaches for swimming and other water sports and the area is perfect for walking and cycling. The Pyrenees Parc National and ski resorts, Lourdes, Biarritz and Spain are also within 1 - 2 hours' drive.

We spent a wonderful holiday at Farguet; the house, pool and gardens were everything we hoped for. The views to the south across rolling countryside with the pyrenees in the distance are fantastic. The property and location is extremely tranquil, a real taste of rural France. The house was very well appointed and comfortable, with plenty of space for the children to charge around. Meals were eaten al fresco in the garden, and afternoons spent loafing around the pool. We found some great restaurants in the area (tried a few of the recommendations in the visitors book) - Bassouses was a particular favourite. We would certainly like to go back. |

A lovely farmhouse which has been gently brought back to life with decor and shabby chic style that would sit well in a Period Living Magazine. Peaceful, private and with scenic views of rural France which extend to the Pyrenees. Perched on a hilltop, the farmhouse and superb 'child safe / fenced and hedged' pool along with bikes, badminton, table tennis, satellite tv etc. etc. provides all the entertainment you could wish for. Plenty of lovely restaurants close by and would recommend the beautiful 13 C fortified medieval village of Bassoues for an evening meal – 11 Euros for a three course meal and bottle of wine. Fabulous atmosphere and great place to further unwind ! |
