The Midi-Pyrénées region

The Gers is in Gascony, famous for the Three Musketeers and Armagnac - a region of beautifully rolling wooded countryside dotted with farms and little villages. It is one of the least populated departments of France and as there are no motorways, railway lines or heavy industry, there is very little pollution and no distant rumble of traffic to disturb the peace and tranquility of your holiday. However, all the usual French goodies are here - lovely villages, little restaurants, local wine, beautiful walks, village fetes and festivals and as a bonus, the Pyrenees are only just over an hour away and offer hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. The Atlantic coast is about 2½ hours away and the Mediterranean about 3½ hours.

The climate here is generally mild, with spring starting early followed by a long summer without too much scorching heat, and beautiful sunny autumn days up until late November. It can be very cold in winter, but not for long, snow is rare and it is often sunny during the day even when the nights are cold. The snow-covered Pyrenees provide a spectacular backdrop and tempt the energetic among us to head for the ski-slopes.

Marciac is a pretty little bastide town of 1000 inhabitants, characteristic of the area - a central village square surrounded by wide shady arcades with shops and restaurants beneath them. There is everything you need for day-to-day living - supermarket, two very good bakers, butcher, newsagent, chemist, cafes, restaurants and a great market every Wednesday. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a boating lake, a small fitness centre, a golf course just down the road at Pallanne and within half an hour's drive, lakes to swim in, tennis courts, crazy golf, river fishing and horse-riding. Marciac Jazz Festival, held during the first two weeks of August, is an internationally-renowned festival, where some of the world’s best jazz musicians come to play. The streets are lined with stalls selling a huge variety of things, and although the streets are thronged with people the atmosphere stays calm and friendly. In July there is Tempo Latino in Vic Fezenzac, where you can dance for three days and nights to wonderful Latin American music and if line- dancing is your thing, there is a Country Music festival in Mirande, where everyone dresses up as cowboys and enthusiasts show off their vintage cars and customised motor bikes. The county town of Auch hosts an impressive, week-long circus festival in October and almost every village holds a weekly market and a yearly fete.

As it is a great wine-producing area and home to Armagnac, there are chateaux offering wine-tastings all year round. There are plenty of good restaurants round about serving local specialites such as duck and foie gras.
