The Costa del Sol/Malaga region

The Coast of the Sun so earned this name for its exceptional weather and many days of bright and warm sunshine abutting one of the most gorgeous bodies of water on the globe. Its 160km of perfectly groomed coastline is packed with immaculate beaches, colourful harbours and affluent resorts. Bedecked in riches of cuisine, history, music and sport, the Costa del Sol never fails to seduce its guests.

Valderrama Golf Club, Monte Mayor & Marbella Club: Over 70 golf courses in Costa del Sol make this the highest concentration in Europe. Booking ahead is highly advised especially during the peak season. Robert Trent Jones’s first European club is Sotogrande Real Golf Club. Valderrama Golf Club was the host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and is one of the most beautifully maintained courses in Europe. In Estepona, El Paraiso Golf Club has well regarded greens and fantastic views. Marbella Club Golf Resort in Benahavis is a highly challenging course requiring constant strategy. With 6 bridges linking the course, Monte Mayor Golf Club is one of Spain’s most loved courses and is an experience for all who tee-off here.

Mijas Golf, Parador del Golf & La Cala Golf Club: If the Costa del Sol is a golfer’s heaven, Marbella is Mecca. Favourite courses include spotlessly manicured Aloha Golf Club, contemporary Cabopino Golf Club, spectacular Rio Real Golf Club, water hazard prevalent Santa Maria Golf Club, and the popular night time tee-offs at Greenlife Golf. East is Mijas. Lower your handicap at La Cala Golf Club or Mijas Golf Club, featuring two 18-hole courses. Malaga Parador del Golf is Costa del Sol’s oldest course. See below for useful links.

Visit Granada, Ronda & Gibraltar – even Africa!
From the Costa del Sol you can head deeper inland and explore Andalucia and even spend a day in Africa. A jaunt into Granada provides a glimpse of Arabic influence on Spain. See the Charles V Palace and Albaicin. Seville is Andalucia’s pride and joy. The historic quarter is spectacular as is the view atop the cathedral. If you can stay into the evening enjoy savoury tapas and tantalising flamenco dancing. Visit Spain’s oldest bullring in the mountain town of Ronda.

Head to Gibraltar to explore the rock’s tunnels and history as a place of strategic significance. Malaga is Costa del Sol’s capital city. Go uphill for a tour of the Castle of Gibralfaro and a bird’s eye view of the city and sea. For the extremely adventurous, hop on a ferry to Tangier in Africa. Arrange a tour ahead of time to take you through the myriad of medinas, sit with snake charmers and sample the world’s most expensive substance, saffron.

Costa del Sol Beaches
Costa del Sol beaches are well known and well loved. Burriana in Nerja is a pebbly beach, but has Blue Flag status and is nonetheless worth a visit. The fine sand of Malaga’s La Malagueta beach is ideal for sunning and swimming and offers many sporting options. Los Boliches in Fuengirola boasts soft fine sand dipping into warm waters.

Playamar in Torremolinos has plenty of sunbeds and sunshine with moderate waves. Also near Torremolinos is La Carihuela, a beach of fine volcanic sand with open air bars. Marbella’s best beaches are Playa de la Bajadilla and Playa de Fantanilla. For families, Malaga’s Playa de las Acacias, Pedregalejo and El Palo beaches are kept calm by dykes set in the sea. La Rada in Estepona is fantastic for sport enthusiasts.

Puerto Banus sailing
Yachting is a way of life in this playground for the affluent. From Gibraltar to Nerja, the coastal waters are dotted with sailing vessels and moored beauties. Puerto Banus sailing is favoures in this, the area’s most famous harbour. For more information about sailing call the Federacion Andaluza de Vela at +34 956 85 22 39. Windsurfing is popular throughout the coast and rentals can be found at all ports.

Scuba divers will love the many dive sites and for the novice, training courses are available in most dive centres. Placer de las Bovedas is on Spain’s Top Ten list and Sierra near Estepona has amazing swim throughs. For comprehensive dive information call the Federacion Andaluza de Actividades Subacuaticas at +34 950 25 21 13. Abdalajis Valley is the best place for paragliding. Bring your tennis rackets as nearly every resort offers courts for guests to utilise.

Costa del Sol Restaurants
Though the Costa del Sol restaurants haven’t got a cuisine all their own, it places on offer a fine mix of fare inspired by many backgrounds. In Sotogrande, El Barlovento specialises in fresh seafood. Superior outdoor seating overlooking gardens at Estepona’s Lido in the Hotel Las Dunas is enough to bring in guests, and the food is delicious; especially the house dish of seafood cannelloni.

Sample fresh tapas at Malaga’s Meson Astorga or try creative Mediterranean dishes at Café de Paris. Marbella has countless options. Olivia Valere is well known for dinner, as well as, its bar and disco. Santiago in Marbella is the best place in the Costa del Sol for seafood with 40-50 dishes of the freshest seafood and fish served everyday. Enjoy mouth watering meats and arroz con leche at Frutos in Torremolinos. Also visit its remarkable wine cellar.

Marbella / Las Chapas area

Las Chapas is situated on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia, southern Spain. It is located twelve kilometres east of Marbella and is one of the most prestigious areas on the coast, full of tropical gardens commanding stunning views to the sea. The exclusive, elegant, Spanish restaurant La Hacienda is situated on the hillside amidst, magnificent, secluded villas and is an idyllic setting for a wonderful, glamorous dinner.

Located directly on the coast, Nikki beach is only a short drive away and offers an absolutely amazing evening out. There is a superb open air, tented restaurant serving Asian and Spanish food which is surrounded by a stunning relaxation area leading to the beach.
