The Costa del Sol region
I have lived here for the last 40 years of my life, as well as in Amsterdam
So I got in a way the best of both worlds. What I missed the first 20 years was culture so I found it in Amsterdam, but during the last 20 years more and more entertainment has started to happen. There are nowadays dozens of great art galleries, quite a few life bands come to perform in some of the great nightclubs like the Marbella Club, Puente Romano hotel and several discos in the region of the Puerto Banus! and various music festival liven up the Costa del Sol !
Then there are in Marbella several great tablaos flamenco with some original gypsies playing fabulous original flamenco music. There are some excellent restaurants and the Spanish tapa-bars are not only famous, but also very affordable. Not to forget the quaint picturesque center of Marbella with great ceramic shops or leather good shops and many fun outside terraces and restaurants with excellent as well as affordable food and drinks.
Nearby you will find the artist villlage Mijas with dozens of adorable boutiques ,art galleries and a view to die for.
Then there is Fuengirola with a lively night life and international public pretty much all year round, There is a fun theater that brings English language theater called salon Varfietes in the heart of Fuengirola: a great meeting place for the many expats who have moved to Spain many years ago as the weather here is so superb.
Andalucia is known for its fantastic climate.Again quite a contrast with my native country of Holland. The mentality of the Andaluz people is notoriously cheerful and they have a somewhat mysterious sense of humor specially when they try to approach you in your own language, then it becomes an odd mixture of shocking funny and downright weird words.
Marbella is within a few hours drive by car or bus from Cordoba, Malaga, Granada, Sevilla
or even Gibraltar and Morocco. Within a fifteen minute drive from my house you will find yourself in a lovely small Spanish village in the mountain where old Spanish men will challenge you to play domino with you and if you lose you have to buy them all a drink which is dirt cheap anyway.
Near Marbella are of course dozens of quaint beach bars where often in summer time and during the weekends various musicians discretely entertain their public without being disturbingly noisy, Here and there women can still go topless but near the bar and restaurant areas women these days cover up again, as some Spanish families are still quite prudish. There is a magnificent nudist beach between Marbella and Fuengirola called Cabopino . and there is also a nudist gay beach,
In the old town of Marbella are some fine jewelery shops and great boutiques, sometimes quite expensive but never over the top. For that you ought to stop by at the boutiques of the Puente Romano hotel or the Marbella Club, both known to cater to the rich and posh people. The food in both places is exquisite , but expensive and so are the clothes in the hotel boutiques. The crowd that lingers here is usual middle aged.
During the weekends there are the street markets in Estepona in the port and on Saturday there is the very busy and colorful street market near the Andalusian old bullring right opposite the famous Puerto Banus. Here again all foreigners and Spaniards who love to browse around get together to shop but more so to see and be seen, Parties are planned for the weekend and the food is affordable. My favorite restaurant is Yanks
