The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Costa del Sol is a region which comprises the coastal towns and communities in the Málaga province, along the Mediterranean coastline. It is in the south of Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The name translates as "Coast of the Sun" in English. Formerly a series of quiet fishing settlements, the region has been completely transformed in the latter part of the 20th century into a tourist destination of world renown, with a near-continuous urban agglomeration of settlements and resorts running along the length of the coastline.
It includes the towns of Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Vélez-Málaga, Nerja, Torrox, Puerto Banús and Estepona.
Settlement in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, and it has been alternatively ruled by many cultures such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors, before the Reconquista.
Traditionally composed of fishing villages, the area was discovered for international tourism in the 1950s and has since been a popular destination for foreign tourists not only for its beaches, but also its tourist culture.
In recent years the Costa Del Sol has become known to golf enthusiasts as the 'Costa Del Golf' due to the vast number of high quality golf courses in the area. Attracting golfers from all over Europe and indeed the world, the area has benefitted from an increase in tourism and is seeing an increasing number of new complexes being developed to house the growing number of keen golfers in the area.
The area is heavily urbanised, with a thick ribbon of densely-packed buildings running along most of the coast. Architectural styles are a mixture of low-rise, whitewashed villas and much high-rise development, especially among the tourist resorts, much of it unsympathetic to the geography.
Marbella / La Quinta Golf and Country Club area
San Pedro Alcantara is situated on the fertile plain of the same name, along the Costa del Sol, just 10 km. from Marbella, a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range and 20 km. from Estepona.
A population centre dependent on Marbella town council which began life as a settlement built by the Marques of Duero in 1860 to house colonists working in the sugar cane and cotton plantations and in the sugar mill, a building which is still standing today. At the same time, the areas of Cancelada and Cortes were born. Even though agriculture is still important, since the 1970's the area has thrived on tourism.
Today San Pedro de Alcantara is a first-class tourist resort, home to a number of luxury housing complexes, golf courses and excellent beaches, while still retaining features of its colonial past.
PLACES OF INTEREST
- Paleochristian Basilica de Vega del Mar, dates back to the 4th century and was discovered in the 10th century. In and around the Basilica there is a Cementery, with some two hundred tombs of varius types. - Parish Church, constructed in 1866 by the Marqués del Duero. The building is of colonial style. Today restored and housing the Deputy Mayor's office - Roman Baths 'Las Bóvedas' or 'The Vaults', that were built in the third century. It consists of an octagonal building containing a central nucleus with seven rooms around it. There is an octagonal pool in the centre. The purpose is thought to be public baths or a water storage place at the end of an aqueduct.
The tourist office gives guides of the ruins on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Meet at 12 noon at the Tourist Office at the arch of San Pedro. The tourist office can be contacted on 952 781 360. The visitors must go with their own cars, because the archaeological rests are quite far to each other.
WHAT TO DO
A pleasant walk is from the centre of town to the beachfront along the Avda. Marques del Duero which is a particularly attractive wide avenue flanked by palm trees, narrow streets which are packed with intriguing small shops, sidewalk cafes and bars.
The promenade is charming and several bars which also serve food can be found right next to the beach. A very popular venue with the local expat population is the BORA BORA, which serves excellent food and drinks which can be enjoyed while literally sitting on the beach.
The beach at San Pedro is nearly 5km. long and has been awarded a blue flag. All of them are well worth the trek and offer jet-skiing in CABLE SKI MARBELLA, pedalos, sunbeds, showers and a play area for the youngsters. There is also plenty of shade under tall trees. There are several beach bars or chiringuitos and restaurants. The sand, although a little stony, was clean and plentiful.
Also San Pedro has a horse riding school, LAKEVIEW EQUESTRIAN CENTRE which organises trips for experienced riders and learners along some of the dirt tracks in the hills around the San Pedro area. If golf is your addiction then GUADALMINA CLUB DE GOLF , half a kilometre along the CN-340, has two beautifully kept courses.
San Pedro also has the last summer fair or feria in Andalucia being in the second week in October. Its saint patron is San Pedro de Alcántara on 19th October.
