About this location
The Andalucia region
Andalusia is one of the most popular and visited areas of Spain with it's historical development, culture, architecture and gastronomy having been influenced by it's proximity to North Africa, just a short 25 km trip by ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar, and the Moorish invaders and settlers. It derives it's name it's Moorish title Al-Andalus and it's capital is the city of Seville, famous for it's oranges and streets filled with the heady scent of it's blossom. The Feria, soon after Easter, is the largest in Spain and lasts for a full week of joy and celebration.
The influence of the Moors is also illustrated in the stunning Alhambra Palace in Granada and skiing is available in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains where snow is plentiful from December to April - quite astonishing when you realise the sub-tropical coast is only 30 kms away. It is one of the very few places in the world where you can enjoy a morning on the piste and an afternoon water skiing from the beach and still have time for a leisurely lunch and siesta in between.
Another major city of Andalusia is Cordoba which has the amazing Mezquita which is a 13th century Cathedral within an 8th century Mosque on the site of a Roman Temple. The building is most notable for its arcaded hypostyle hall, with 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite.
Our villa is set in Málaga province named after it's capital city which is the southernmost large city in Europe, and is central on the Costa del Sol. It enjoys a subtropical–mediterranean climate and has one of the warmest winters in Europe, with average temperatures of 17 °C (62.6 °F) during the day and 7–8 °C (45–46 °F) at night in the period from December through February. The summer season lasts about eight months, from April to November, although in the remaining four months temperatures sometimes reach around 20 °C (68.0 °F). Málaga's history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Malaka in about 770 BC, and from the 6th century BC was under the hegemony of Ancient Carthage.
Malaga is the nearest airport to the villa, about a 45 minute drive away and has a busy port with ferries to the Balearics.
There villa is nestled on the western slopes of La Concha, the mountain situated behind Marbella, which creates a micro climate and the area enjoys 320 days of sunshine a year. Marbella is a magnet for the rich and famous and has developed over 60 years from a quaint Spanish fishing village into one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Spain and caters superbly for the many tourists to the region. There is plenty to see and do for everybody all within easy reach of our villa including a range of beaches, several marinas and a water park and dolphinarium at Torremolinos with a cable car ride to the hills above. Ronda is about an hour away and boasts a bull ring, believed to be the oldest in Spain.
