About this location
The Andalucia region
The Costa Del Sol is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Certainly it is one of Europe's best equipped holiday playgrounds! Such highly developed resorts such as Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Marbella cater for every taste and pocket, combining the attractions of sandy beaches, top-notch sporting facilities, lively bars and restaurants, an exhilarating night-life and an exceptional climate.
Located between the Sierra Blanca mountains and the Mediterranean, Marbella enjoys it's own mild micro-climate. The temperatures below are average daily shade temperatures. It's shorts and 'T' shirts for the vast majority of the year, and a light jersey is generally adequate during winter months!
Along the coast and you can see the Rock of Gibraltar. Look to the left of the Rock (out to sea) and you can see the Altas mountains of North Africa. Given the closeness of Marbella to the deserts of Africa, it is no surprise that the sun shines for approx. 320 days per year.
BEACHES - The beaches in the area are renowned for their beauty and cleanliness and stretch for miles in both direction. Spend a day chilling out on the beach, enjoying a long leisurely lunch at one of the local beach restaurants. Plenty of beach activities are available if desired, or just take your latest book and find a parasol.
GOLF - Santa Maria Golf & Country Club has come to occupy a well-earned place amongst the elite golf clubs in the Costa del Sol The 18-hole course offers players a challenging game with view of both the mountains and the Mediterranean. Santa Maria Golf Course is only 100 metres away.
There are approximately 35 other golf courses nearby (within a 25 minute drive:
- Cabopino Golf -a beautiful course near the port of Cabopino where you will find some lovely bars and restaurants for after your round. 10 mins away.
Rio Real Golf - The course is not an easy one, although the layout is mainly flat. To successfully negotiate the eleventh hole, e.g, golfers’ tee shots must cross a ravine onto the fairway, & before reaching the green.
Other golf courses include Marbella Golf, Greenlife Golf, El Soto Golf, Santa Clara Golf, La Quinta, Las Brisas, Los Noranjos, El Soto De Marbella Golf & Artola Golf. Particular mention goes to Greenlife Golf where there is a par 3 golf course, ideal for beginners.
Close to beaches and the picturesque port of Cabopino. For families there are many attractions including: Tivoli World, Aqualand, Zoo, cable car. There are tennis courts and academy in the complex, a riding school and bowling.
MARBELLA TOWN - Marbella Old Town, only 5-miles away boasts many restaurants set within Plaza de Los Naranjos (Square of the Oranges). Fantastic designer shopping experience!
Marbella City Centre is a luxurious resort town and is well known as one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Europe. It is a favourite location for the rich and famous. Why not take a stroll and explore the old town, take a coffee or cerveza in Plaza de Los Naranjos, indulge in some shopping, or enjoy a leisurely lunch on the sea front?
Just a little further around the coast and you’ll arrive at the world renowned Puerto Banus!
SHOPPING - Local shopping centre is close by with many restaurants (Italian, French, Chinese, Indian and Spanish).Banks, hairdressers, dry cleaning and supermarkets (one open till 2am).
If you fancy some serious shopping, La Canada - a large air conditioned shopping mall housing a wide variety of stores and dining facilities is less than10 minutes away en route to Marbella. It even has its own Hypermarket (Alcampo) within the complex.
Another well-established quality department store certainly worth some time is El Corte Ingles which is located alongside the N340 in the heart of Puerto Banus. This also has it's own Hypercor within. More recently a new El Corte Ingles has opened 20 minutes down the road in Fuengirola. Fuengirola also has a Dunnes store which is next to another high quality shopping mall, Myramar and the Eroski hypermart
SKIING - The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range provides excellent skiing facilities!
Sierra Nevada defies many concepts associated with skiing. Located at barely a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean coast, it has practically guaranteed sunshine, the best spring snow conditions in Europe and is still reasonably priced compared to many of its European counterparts. As one of Europe's highest resorts it has a typically long season, traditionally opening at the end of November running through to the end of April or even into the first week of May.
Getting kitted out and ready for the slopes is made easy by Rio Sport Intersport equipment-hire shop where you will find quality rental equipment and a team of English speaking knowledgeable staff to equip you with the right equipment according to your standard. Here you will also find the British Ski Centre based for any tuition or guiding requirements you may have.
CABOPINO - A few minutes down the A-7 brings you to Puerto Cabopino. This is a charming, tranquil marina, flanked by white sandy beaches and is built in a traditional white spanish village style. In the summer months there are Water Sports and a Dolphin Safari Boat operating out of a small harbour of about a hundred boats ranging from dinghies up to seventy-foot motor cruisers.
The marina has a wonderful friendly atmosphere. There are many bars and restaurants, (e.g. Alberts, La Dispensa, Harbour Lights, Sheeban Irish Bar) some actually situated on the beach, where one can snack on tapas, delicious locally caught fish or choose from the menu. In the port itself there is a wide range of International Restaurants. English, Spanish, Italian and Chinese. Also close by is an Old Spanish Coaching Inn with a small par three golf course.
NIGHTLIFE - If you enjoy Spanish wines, beers and Sangria, you are spoilt for choice! Within walking distance, you’ll find the cosy bars of Elviria and once again a short car ride takes you to Cabopino, Marbella or the town that hardly sleeps ..... Puerto Banus! If you are feeling lucky - then why not spend an hour or two in the Casino Marbella in Puerto Banus.
