The Costa Calida region
Mar Menor Golf Resort is just 5km from the beautiful sandy beach at Los Alcazares which sits on the western shore of the beautiful Mar Menor, a saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 22 kilometre long strip of land called La Manga (the Sleeve).
La Manga (20 minute drive) has more than 40km of beaches and the unique possibility of choosing between two seas with very different water temperatures, one with waves and one practically calm all year long. The non-tidal Mar Menor is not more than 8m deep and the average water temperature is 23 degrees C (5 degrees warmer than the Med), which makes it one of the largest swimming pools in the world and ideal for children and water sports enthusiasts alike. There is also a lovely promenade along the beach which extends for a few kilometres. You may also want to keep an eye on the skies as the Spanish Air Force display team are based in the Mar Menor region so you may get a free air display while they practice over the area. Los Alcázares has a good range of restaurants, cafés, tapas bars etc.
San Pedro del Pinatar (Saint Peter of the Pinewoods) is a fishing village located at the north end of Mar Menor. The nearby Salinas y Arenales Regional Park contains some of the most important wetland areas in Europe with a rich and varied wildlife, and are particularly important for bird species of which there are many. The park has an area of about 2250 hectares. Flocks of pink flamingos stop over here each year on their journey to north Africa at the end of the summer. The area of the park open to the public, encompassing pine trees, dunes and sandy beaches with transparent waters, such as La Llana beach, can be visited on foot or by bicycle. There are also healing mud baths located at Lo Pagán near the beach close to San Pedro. The high mineral content of the mud is supposed to have healing properties. Lo Pagán also has a fish market where you can see traditional fish auctions.
The beautiful city of Cartegena is only 15 minutes drive away with its historical buildings and designer shops. Cartegena is the second largest city in the Murcia region and has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. The Roman Amphitheatre in Cartagena is a must-see. The city is also home to numerous early 20th century buildings including the City Hall, the Grand Hotel and the Casino all of which are worth a visit.
The provincial capital of Murcia, the last Moorish stronghold in Spain, is a fine example of history blended perfectly with new commercial interests and is only a 30 minute drive away. It offers fantastic nightlife, shopping and restaurants. The Cathedral of Murcia was built between 1394 and 1465 in the Castilian Gothic style and is a must-see. The Glorieta, which lies on the banks of the Segura River, has traditionally been the centre of the town. It is a beautiful city square that was constructed during the 18th century. Pedestrian areas cover most of the old town, which is centered around Platería and Trapería Streets. Trapería goes from the Cathedral to the Plaza de Santo Domingo, formerly a bustling market square. Located in Trapería is the Casino, a social club erected in 1847, with a sumptuous interior that includes a Moorish-style patio inspired by the royal chambers of the Alhambra near Granada. The name Plateria refers to plata (silver), as this street was the historical focus for the commerce of rare metals by Murcia's Jewish community. The other street, Traperia, refers to trapos, or cloths, as this was once the focus for the Jewish community's garment trade.
Villa Lily is also approximately:
• 2.5 hour drive to Granada and the Alhambra Palace
• 2.5 hour drive to Valencia
• 3 hour drive to the Sierra Nevada Ski Resorts
• 4 hour drive to Madrid.
This region of Spain enjoys on average 320 days of glorious sunshine each year and given how much there is to do, it is an ideal year round holiday destination.
