The nearest airport is Cagliari where you can hire from all the popular car firms. It takes 40 minutes to reach Santa Margherita.
Ryanair flys direct to Cagliari from Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh (and also to Alghero which is in the north of the Island). Easyjet flys direct from Stansted and also BA from Gatwick. There are many ports which offer a short ferry crossing to Sardinia. Overnight ferries from Toulon, Marseilles and Nice in the South of France
