How to get there
The best way is to fly to Oporto, hire a car and drive here. You could also fly to Porto, get the GetBus to Braga - check out times - the bus stops right outside Porto airport and takes you to the bus station in Braga. From there you could get a taxi to the house.
If you want to see Lisbon first, it's possible to fly to Lisbon, and drive north - about 4 hours.You could even fly from Lisbon to Porto - if you got a good deal.
Overall - I'd say a car is pretty invaluable here as we live up a mountain and without a car you'll be dependent on taxis (although there is a taxi driver, with his own taxi, who lives just down the road from the house).

Getting around
A car is pretty essential as there is a lot to see and do in the area. If you really hate driving you could get the 'GetBus' from Porto airport to Braga and then a taxi to the house (10€ approx for the taxi). There is a taxi driver who lives 2 minutes from the house and he could take you to places of interest - Virginia will give you a list in advance (Places to Visit in a Week) and can decide what you'd like to visit. The nearest train station is in Braga, 15 minutes away.
