How to get there

Flights to Orkney are operated by Flybe from Inverness, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Sumburghare several car ferries serving Orkney. The closest is Pentland Ferries running from Gills Bay, near John O' Groats, to St Margaret's Hope. This takes around one hour. The drive from St Margaret's Hope to Sherwood Cottage takes around 5 minutes. Services run daily.Northlink Ferries operate two services to Orkney: Aberdeen - Kirkwall and Scrabster - Stromness. The Aberdeen - Kirkwall service operates 3/4 days a week and takes around 6 hours. The Scrabster - Stromness service operates daily and has a 90 minute journey time.The John O' Groats passenger ferry travels from John O' Groats to Burwick daily between May and September. The journey takes 40 minutes. There is a connecting bus to Burwick and Kirkwall which should drop off at Burray village if requested. From 1st June to 31st August an Orkney bus leaves from Inverness and connects with the John

Getting around

Car is the easiest way to get around Orkney to see major sites. However, the main bus route from St Margaret's Hope to Stromness via Kirkwall, has a stop a couple of minutes walk from the cottage. Buses go approximately once an hour and further details can be found on the Orkney Islands Council website.
