How to get there


There are daily flights from Europe to Dar es Salaam by BA, KLM, Air France, Swiss International, Emirates, Ethiopean Airways, and Qatar Airline. SAA flies daily from and to Johannesburg. Kumuka-BA has flights from Johannesburg to Dar es Salaam five times a week.

The nearest and most convenient international airport is on Zanzibar Island. It is less than three hours from Ushongo. There are fairly frequent daily flights and ferry services from Dar es Salaam. Kenya Airways, Ethiopian, and Emirates have daily flights.

1Time has twice-weekly flights from and to Johannesburg-Zanzibar on Tuesdays and Saturdays. From Stone Town to Kenrock is one hour by taxi ($50) and from Kenrock to Ushongo is 90 minutes by a comfortable 17-seater express boat built in New Zealand for island-hopping ($50 per person – children half fare). Alternately there are the slower local boats at $150 per boat one way ($220 for overnight) and the trip takes 3 hours.

From Arusha:

Bus to Tanga $10. Seven hours. Five buses daily. Continue by taxi or by hire car to Ushongo.

By Road 6 hours: Same – Mombo - Segera – Muheza turn right to Pangani – Mwera – Ushongo.

Flights: Daily afternoon flights by Regional Air and Flight Link.

From Dar es Salaam:

Transfer by Vehicle: $350.

Buses: daily to Tanga $10. Seven hours. Five buses daily. Continue by taxi or by hire car to Ushongo $90.

Road: Chalinze - Mkata(60 kms north of Wami River; turn right to Mkwaju) – Mwera - Ushongo.

Air: Flight Link and Regional Air operate daily flights or on request.
