How to get there

FERRY CROSSINGS - The main ferry to Bute runs from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay. The service, operated by Caledonian MacBrayne, runs every 45 minutes – 1 hour all year round with some later sailings during the summer weekends. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes and bookings are not required. Further information and full timetables are avaialble on the Calmac website. *Calmac also operates a smaller ferry service between Rhubodach (at the north end of Bute) and Colintraive, located on the Cowal peninsula. This is an excellent service for those wishing to take a more “scenic” route through the Argyll countryside as the route goes past Loch Lomond and the famous “Rest and Be Thankful” viewpoint.

Getting around

The best way to explore the island at your own pace is by car, however we do understand that not all guests wish to bring their car on holiday. There is a reliable bus service which travels from Kilchattan Bay at the south of the island up to Rhubodach at the north. All buses travel through the town and Port Bannatyne and there are bus stops located just along the road from Schiehallion. There are also buses which take you to Ettrick Bay where you can also enjoy lunch or coffee at the café. During the summer season the bus service also runs to Mount Stuart house. During the summer there is also a City Sightseeing bus, which is a hop on - hop off service, that tours around the island frequently.
