Pisa or Genoa is the nearest airport, both served by Ryanair as well as Easy Jet and B.A. Cars can be rented at both these airports, and the drive is an easy one using autostrada, and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Hertz seem to have offers connected with Ryanair which we have used, and we have frequently driven from England, using Norfolk line ferries or the tunnel.

If you have two drivers the journey takes about 13 hours, or you can add to the pleasure of your holiday and motor through France, pausing in Dijon or Dole, and then crossing through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Although this is a more expensive way to go, we have always found it part of the adventure and the pleasure of passing through the white route, and seeing rice fields in the Po valley never ceases to thrill us.
