About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
Charente is located in the Poitou Charente region, which is described as the second sunniest part of France after the Cote d'Azur.
The historic town of Angouleme, famed for cartoons which can be seen on the buildings, lies to the south of the region within the town ramparts. The 'race around the ramparts' of vintage cars is a memorable spectacle.
Here you find the lively market, chocolatiers and high class restaurants (wagyu beef included) as well as a range of eating places to suit all pockets and tastes.
La Rochefoucauld with its magnificent chateau where visitors can try on clothes from a bygone elegant age is situated on the River Bonnieure. Visitors also appreciate the many niche boutiques in the town.
Cognac is perhaps self-explanatory, and worth visiting for a memorable river trip as well as sampling the famous brandy, and learning how it is produced.
The delightful town of Royan has two beaches, one long and the other in a bay which therefore has a cosy feel. Other resorts are located along the coast, all with their different characteristics. la Rochelle is well known, and Fort Bouyard floats near the coast at that point.
The local area is alive with red squirrels, raptors and other creatures rare in the English countryside. The meandering Charente river allows exploration by car, on foot, by bike or by canoe.
The river valley and gentle hills are ideal for cycling along the roads and lanes which are little used by motor traffic, and many cycle routes are signposted locally.
Innumerable chateaux are to be found within a few miles, the Chateau de Rochefoucauld is particularly impressive, with its neighbouring restaurant and chocolate factory. Also well worth visiting are the chateaux at Verteuil and Bayers, among many others.
As well as fishing from the river bank which is private to the property there are a number of trout lakes locally where a day licence may be purchased.
Further afield is the unique Futuroscope, the Valley of the monkeys, Oradour sur Glane where German soldiers slaughtered almost the entire population, which has been kept as it as left as a reminder to all who visit.

"Relaxing and refreshing"
Welcomed cheerfully on arrival by the owner, and shown around the gite and grounds. The gite is a well appointed, spacious open plan room containing sleeping, lounge and dining furniture and kitchen. … More

"A small slice of peace"
This property will not be everyone's taste, but if you want clean basic and peace and quite and large pool for yourself ,than read on.
This apartment is above a few store rooms situated beside the main house and has been kept in a traditional manner ,it is one very large room ,with a small rustic kitchen to one end which is divided from the room by a original small wall ,just to one side is a tastefully built Italian style shower room.
The double bed is at the other end of the room with settees and dinning furniture in between. It has all the amenities that you would need ,for a basic stay.Eat out as there are lovely restaurants in the village of Mansle especially La Belle Etoile and Le Marmite ( love it or hate it ).
The room also has a wonderful fire place and as the weather was not at its best we had several log fires in the evening, snuggled up in front with a bottle of wine ,bread and cheese,my idea of a perfect end to a day.
There is private parking and a garden that is stunning, with a beautiful large swimming pool.Take time to go through the gate at the end of the garden and down a slight incline and follow the path to the bank of the River Charante. Watch out for mosquitoes in the evening.
There is a built Bar-B-Q loungers and table and chairs. Also a croquet area.
Mansle is a small riverside village located inland ,but very close to Cognac and Saintes (where once a month is the biggest market in France ,it covers the whole city) also Angouleme the home of Tintin creator and home of comic strip museum. About two hours drive is La Rochelle on the coast ,a must see.The harbour castle and covered walkways around the town.
The English owner was there a few days at the start of our vacation ,and she made us feel very welcome. Also the English couple who look after the pool and grass when the owner is away were a fountain of local knowledge and we thank them for their help.
If you like to be with the one you love,in a beautiful area staying in a wonderful apartment then this could be for you.

Hi, we stayed at the Maison and Apartment in August 2013. Both properties were fantastic and the outside pool, gardens and riverside were beautiful. The property is based in a lovely little town with supermarket and town centre within easy walking distance. We also hired bikes and canoe's I would highly recommend this property to anyone
I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday in the apartment and that you made good use of the pool, the garden and the bbq!
