The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
Charante region is traditional farming country. Crops are mainly sunflowers and maize and the landscape is one of low hills and woodland (mainly chestnut and hazel). There are small local vineyards with larger wine-growing area to the south, nearer to Bordeaux and Cognac.
It is possible to visit the beaches of La Rochelle (to the west) or the city of Limoges (to the east), these would each be a full daytrip by car.
Mansle / Cellefrouin area
The village of Le Temple de Cellefruin is approximately 10 miles east of Mansle, a small town on the river Charante which lies between Poitiers and Angouleme. Excellent local produce can be obtained from supermarkets in the towns of Mansle or Roumazier (juist 3o mins drive). There are man-made lakes about 12 miles from the village where watersports and swimming are available, with safe areas for small children to paddle and an abundance of picnic sites!
The small town of St Claud is just 4miles away and boasts an excellent outdoor swimming pool.
At Mansle there are opportunities to canoe on the river ( which you can also swim in).
Angouleme (30 mins drive) has a wonderful food market and excellent restaurants, night life etc as well as a very impressive cathedral.
La Rochfoucauld has a spectacular chateau, still occupied by the family but open to visitors most of the year.
Other chateaux and places of interest all around. A quiet and peaceful area. (Not ideal for teenagers wishing to 'live it up!')

Guestbook
"The children quickly discovered the village and a kind of freedom not posible in England. We visited many rivers, lakes and lovely chateaux and also went further afield to a wonderful European wild animal park and to Futurescope. The men went round the cognac distillery at Cognac and came away with lots of samples..."
"We had BBQs each night under the stars and spent our days discovering the surrounding towns and villages. We loved Angouleme with its vast Romaesque cathedral and were so impressed by the chateau of La Rochfoucauld. We found our visit ot Oradour, a village where the entire population was massacred by Nazis in WW2, which has been left as a Memorial to those who died profoundly disturbing, but still worth a visit. We stocked up with excellent wine at ridiculous prices and made friends with your neighbours."
"We all loved the peaceful countryside. We went picnicking by local rivers and explored the manmade lakes with their range of watersports facilities. We discovered caves to the south nearer to Angouleme and even ventured to the sea one day. the house was comfortable and spacious; there was room for us all. We even had friends to stay for a weekend and there were 11 of us then!"
