Manor House | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
A delightful feature of this property is that it is in the town yet only a 5-minute amble to shops etc, while set in a beautiful large private garden with tiled pool with proper steps.
Self-catering house (sleeps 8 + cot) with separate apartment (sleeps 2/3). The house sleeps up to 9 people in 4 double bedrooms, 2 en suite shower rooms plus a house bathroom. There is a fitted kitchen with gas hob, fan oven, washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, juicer, microwave and toaster. The salon provides UK tv, and there is a separate snug/dvd playstation room. The house has been completely renovated to provide easy living accommodation.
The property is conveniently situated in town, but within a walled private garden and ten acres of trees and wilderness which includes red squirrels, deer, woodpeckers, jays, etc and 500 metres of delightful river bank with fishing.
Dining room seats 10+ at an expandable table and provides views to the garden and pool. The salon
is furnished with 3 leather chesterfields (3-seater, 2-seater and 1-seater); other seating is available to use as required. UK freeview tvand dvd player; for gamers there is a separate
Snug with 2-seater setter and 2 chairs, PS2, DVD, CD player; 2 double bedrooms have en-suite wc, shower and washbasin and fitted wardrobes; 2 twin bedrooms one with washbasin unit and fitted wardrobe
House bathroom with wc, bath and washhand basin. Downstairs wc with wash basin.
The house is 5 minutes walk from supermarkets, bakers, butchers, bars, restaurants, the canoe club and tourist centre. The canoe club hires canoes and bicycles and runs special sessions for children each weekday morning during the holidays and is good for all ages. Anyone can go on the evening "descent of the Charente" by canoe, followed by a communal supper, which I can thoroughly recommend.
Garden croquet and badminton are set out in the garden, or sit and watch red squirrels eat hazelnuts.

The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The Charente is described as the second sunniest part of France after the Cote d'Azur. The department takes its name from the meandering River Charente which wends across the region.
The nearest large town is Angouleme, renowned for the cartoons which festoon many of the walls and city ramparts. Here you find the lively market, chocolatiers and high class restaurants (wagyu beef included) as well as a range of eating places to suit all pockets and tastes.
La Rochefoucauld with its magnificent chateau where visitors can try on clothes from a bygone elegant age is situated on the River Bonnieure. Visitors also appreciate the many niche boutiques in the town.
Cognac is perhaps self-explanatory, and worth visiting for a memorable river trip as well as sampling the famous brandy, and learning how it is produced.
The delightful town of Royan has two beaches, one long and the other in a bay which therefore has a cosy feel. Other resorts are located along the coast, all with their different characteristics. la Rochelle is well known, and Fort Bouyard floats near the coast at that point.
The River Charente, which borders the property, is a slow river which you can often cross three or four times in a short journey as it makes its way to the sea. The undulating countryside is ideal for cycling with many signposted cycle tracks traversing the typical sunflower fields and regularly located villages with local bakers and bars.
Licheres is close by with the passenger-powered ferry (pull a rope!) which lands you on the opposite bank and further woodland walks or bike rides.
The town of Mansle has several restaurants, each with different specialities - for example beef, fish or pizza - all cater for vegetarians.
Innumerable chateaux are to be found within a few miles, the Chateau de Rochefoucauld is particularly impressive, with its neighbouring restaurant and chocolate factory. Also well worth visiting are the chateaux at Verteuil and Bayers, among many others.
As well as fishing from the river bank which is private to the property there are a number of trout lakes locally where a day licence may be purchased. The local trout fishing lake is regularly stocked and five minutes walk from the house.
Further afield is the unique Futuroscope, the Valley of the monkeys, Oradour sur Glane where German soldiers slaughtered almost the entire population, which has been kept as it as left as a reminder to all who visit.
