The Northern Mountains region
Located in the heart of Portugal, Gandufe is near the most important cities of the region: 20 km to the Northwest is Viseu, known for its vineyards and good wine and typical gastronomy made with quality ingredients using traditional recipes.
Coimbra is 80 km to the Southwest. There you'll find the oldest university of Europe. 100 km to the West lies Aveiro- beautiful beaches and channels that remind you of Venice. 20 km to the South there's Seia, a city in the mountains where you'll find genuine craftsmen selling sheepskin apparel and shoes or the famous "Queijo da Serra"- a world renown cheese made from sheep milk known for its extraordinary taste. You have to taste it!!! It's like heaven!
In the Winter snow covers the hills around showing us a wonderful landscape where you can practice winter sports and in the Summer the temperature rises to 30ºC inviting you for a swim in the river near the Spa of Alcafache.
Mangualde / Gandufe area
Gandufe is a small village that goes back to the XII century. "Gundulfus" or "Gundulfo", a goth lord, built a castle with military and housing functions, its ruins can still be visited today. The Goth name "Gundulfus"became the village name, "Gandufe".
Ancient history are all around: the remains of the tower of Gundulfus; a megalithic monument from the 3rd and 2nd millenniums b.c. (National Monument) with a polygonal chamber made up of nine upright stones and capstone with all its pagan magic; medieval graves, roman bridges and a fountain where once upon a time a man in love declared his passion to his beloved bride (Ricardina) leading to a known novel by Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco - O Retrato de Ricardina (The Portrait of Ricardina).
Throughout the region you will find valuable heritage, traces from other eras, from prehistoric times to the roman and pre-roman occupation and medieval times. There are also religious buildings dating back over a number of eras, manor houses and grounds, rural houses and hidden villages...
Nearby you have the Dão River's hot-spring resorts (Termas de Alcafache) and bathing area - and on the Mondego River you'll find the Termas das Caldas da Felgueira. Its waters serve as treatment for rheumatic problems, muscle and skeletal disorders, lung, ear, nose and throat disorders. Beauty treatments are also available (wine therapy).
Every Tuesday you can visit the typical market in the centre of Viseu, where farmers sell their biological produce. Summer is a particularly festive season, as regional festivals take place all around; every week in August one of the surrounding villages has a tribute party to their religious saint.
In September it's time for the famous Wine and Vine Festival in Nelas, where the wine producers show their harvests to the public. Since wine is the regional products of excellence, why not take the wine route or visit the Lafões wine producers, enjoying the view of the vast vineyards surrounded by stonewalls or paths that mark the fields in village of Santar.
