The Lombardy region

Lake Como, a fascinating area that will win your heart

Welcome to Lake Como one of the most beautiful areas in Lombardy. This pre-alpine lake surrounded by a crown of mountains with peaks up to 2700 m high, is not only spectacular but rich in history and tradition. The lake is perfect for active as well as relaxing holidays. Splendid 17th century villas with their lovely gardens, antique Romanesque churches, old connection trails, mountain tops with a superb view of the lake, and lots of sport facilities await you.

Lake Como is situated 45 km north of Milan, close to the Swiss border. It is 46 km long and has the form of an upside down Y dividing itself into two branches at the town Bellagio with the town Como at the tip of the southwestern branch and the town Lecco at the tip of the southeastern branch. Its crystal clear waters are up to 400 deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

By boat you can enjoy the view of the shores dotted with small towns of rare beauty, by bus or car you can discover the valleys with their rural settlements and small churches and on foot or by mountain bike you explore the many trails around the lake.

To the South, it gives way to the verdant landscape of the area called Brianza, with villages, castles and hills marked by the flow of the Adda and Lambro Rivers.

Mandello Del Lario

A town situated on the eastern shore of the Lecco section of Lake Como, at the feet of the Grigne mountain group, Mandello del Lario was home to the Roman municipal and Longobard royal court, as well as one of the most important counties of the upper Milan area. Having become a free commune, it was ruled by the Signoria of the Visconti, Dal Verme, Sanseverino and Sfondrati. But its recent history is more interesting.

Historic headquarters of Moto Guzzi since 1921, the area was modelled and remodelled around developments of this production, eith a clear increase in the areas suited as production plants, the construction of houses for workers and recreational facilities, as well as remarkable works of collective interest.

The paper, electro-technical and packaging industries are also important for the town, as well as holiday, hiking and sport tourism (especially in terms of canoeing and other water sports).

An interesting route that features the surroundings of Mandello is the Itinerario della Memoria, which covers the Resistance tracks in this area.

The shelters of the nearby Piani Resinelli can be easily reached instead if you love the mountains.
