About this location
The Italian Riviera region
Perched in the coves and developed the Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso) arise in the eastern part of the East river, bounded on the east by the Head of Montenero and west from Punta Masco. Five villages in which contains evidence of human presence, the first dating back many centuries ago.
In this corner of the earth as beautiful as it is difficult to keep the people have constantly tried to escape to the mountain areas and land to survive.
Testimony of stubbornness and will, (which is still peculiar virtue of the inhabitants of the Cinque Terre), the features are terraces cut into the mountain thanks to the ingenious construction of thousands and thousands of meters of dry stone walls, brought up with great effort and sacrifice. These terraces planted mostly to vineyards and olive groves to a lesser extent, were up to the 50s - 60s the only source of income and livelihood for most households.
Products that have made famous Cinque Terre are famous sciacchetrà, wine made with the 'withering of the best grapes, and the Cinque Terre DOC white Also famous are the lemons produced in the Cinque Terre just because of microclimate and thin skin which is produced Limoncino, typical liquor with good digestive effects.
Just for the extraordinary spectacle offered by nature and man as it is able to maintain and preserve, the Cinque Terre have been declared in 1999 the National Park and World Heritage Site.
In every village of the Cinque Terre National Park has operated information centers and accommodation for visitors (see National Park website).
Access to the Cinque Terre and guaranteed sevendosi train from the railway line La Spezia - Genoa (surely the best way to reach them), from SP No. 370 which reaches from La Spezia, the Cinque Terre in about half an hour, the boats of the soc. Navigation Gulf of Poets in the tourist season (from March to November now) connect La Spezia and Portovenere with the Cinque Terre.
Entirely surrounded by hills covered with vineyards, offers tourists a peaceful environment for a very relaxing holiday. Do not miss:
- Visit to the parish church of St. Lorenzo Ligurian Gothic style dating back to 1338.
- The marina, lovely angle from which the rock formed in a scenic stroll that connects to a lovely cove where you can go bathing in peace.
- Visit to the side and perched over the sea from where you can admire the other villages of the Cinque Terre.
- True find the crib is light that is in the Christmas period, many years from now, lit at dusk on a hill above Manarola. Designed and built by a local resident, with waste materials, is composed of dozens and dozens of figures placed on the terraces of vineyards, to the activation of thousands of bulbs offer a unique spectacle in the world.
Also visit the shrine of Our Lady of Health is Volastra, a small village located at a height of 300 meters above the sea and within walking distance with an old dirt road that runs through the cultivation of vines and olives (about 1 hour from Manarola) or a shuttle bus service operated by the National Park of Cinque Terre (see schedule).
Halfway between Manarola and Volastra Groppo rises, a small town where he established the Cooperative Agriculture of the Cinque Terre at which they are conferred the grapes grown in the vineyards of the Cinque Terre white wine and bottled the Cinque Terre DOC and the famous sweet wine Sciacchetrà. Also in recent years, always Groppo, the National Park of Cinque Terre has restructured and put back into service an old mill for pressing olives.
From Manarola Corniglia can then walk on a trail overlooking the sea in about 1 hour.
