The Brittany / Morbihan region
The holiday house is situated in rural South Brittany, in rolling countryside close to the River Oust and Nant-Brest canal. The house is within easy reach of the medieval town of Josselin, with its impressive castle, the fine walled city of Vannes, Questembert with its large medieval market hall and pictureque Rochefort-en-Terre. The closest beaches are at Damgan (less than 40 minutes away) and numerous other good beaches lie south of the Gulf of Mornihan and around Carnac (famous for its magaliths) and on the Quiberon peninsula. These provide safe bathing, sailing, surfing and windsurfing. Further afield, Brittany's capital city Rennes, St Nazaire, with its German U-boat pens, the chic resort of La Baule, nearby salt pans at Guerande, and picturesque Auray, all make interesting trips.
Malestroit area
The nearby large village of Serent (2 km) has an open air swimming pool, several good restaurants, a costume museum, a supermarket and other shops, banks and a post office as well as a small Wednesday market. The historic town of Malestroit, an easy bike ride along the river/canal from the holiday house, has, in addition, a cinema, a tourist office, further good restaurants and frequent evening jazz and folk concerts in the square. Also close by are:- at Ploermel, the Lac au Duc with its water sport activities and golf course; the pretty village of Lizio, with its insectareum, craft museum and gallery of animated sculptures; the grotto at Callac; and at St Marcel, a major museum to the local French Resistance.
How to get there
• The cottage lies only 120 km south of picturesque St Malo, the nearest Channel port (Brittany Ferries), this route passing close to medieval Dinan. • There are also toll free motorways from Caen and Cherbourg (Brittany Ferries), these taking you near to Mont St Michel, medieval Fougeres and Rennes.
