The Provence region
The property is set in the Roman part and the papal part of Provence, when the Popes ruled in Avignon. Vaison la Romaine is 10' away and offers extensive Roman excavations, a Roman Theatre, Museum and a famous Roman bridge which withstood the disastrous flooding of 1992!
From here you bike up Mont Ventoux, passing the Grozeau, a source already used by the Romans to feed Vaison la Romaine with drinking water, and still used today for the village of Malaucène. From Mont Ventoux you pass down to Sault with its extensive lavender fields and gorgeous views on the mountains of the nearby Drôme and over the Rhône valley.
All major sites of Provence are in easy reach for daily excursions.
Malaucène is a village of about 2500 inhabitants with a medieval part and a famous historic monument, the Romanesque church. To flee the heat of summer, the popes in Avignon had a now destroyed summer seat at the source Le Grozeau, just before one gets up Mont Ventoux.
All towns and villages in Provence have colourful weekly markets where you find everything. So has Malaucène. Nearby Vaison la Romaine and Carpentras provide even bigger markets.
The Roman amphitheatre in Orange is the setting for a world famous opera Festival in July and August,; the Roman smaller amphitheatre in Vaison la Romaine invites you in July to spectacular dance performances; Aix en Provence with its new opera house offers a great variety of stagings all summer. In the vineyards, in chapels or on squares, music and theatre are performed.
