The Crete region
Crete is the southernmost island of Europe. You know the sort of holiday destination that you always look for, but never actually find ? Well.... Its bountiful variety of features includes mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach bars, water sports & night life. There are magnificent mountain ranges, spectacular sandy beaches, tranquil locations and some of the clearest water on the planet (snorkelling and scuba diving are highly recommended). Bathed in clear sunlight much of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island in Greece, it is understandably a most popular travel and vacation destination.
The sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas provide a spectacular backdrop to every bay and cove. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. Breath in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses. The locally produced wine is sensational. The white's compare very favourably to smooth Australian Chardonnay and fresh New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village, the excitement and spillover of weddings and occasions, the history, the people and the world-sourced visitors. It is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise.
Crete has a people noted for and conspicuous in their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.
Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateaus that reward the discerning world traveller.
Do as much or as little as you want. Hectic water sports, lazing on deserted beaches, quiet afternoons in beach side tavernas, lively nights in buzzing local bars and restaurants.
Makrigialos area
Situated on the south east coast of Crete, Makrigialos is only 30 minutes from the working towns of Irapature (on the south coast) and Sitea (on the north coast).
Makrigialos is characterised by some of the best beaches in all of Crete (and that is saying something). There are many secluded coves, all gently lapped by crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean sea.
A mountain ridge runs West to East across the island and it is this which gives Southern Crete it's own very special climate. The mountains shield this part of the island from any 'inclement' weather. Additionally Makrigialos itself is surrounded by it's own mountain range. This geography means that the Makrigialos area has the best climate in all of Crete, and possibly the entire Mediterranean.
The area is popular with tourists all through the winter. It is not difficult to understand why the area produces what is considered to be the best olive oil in the world. The oil has a very high specific gravity and is widely treasured by the best restaurants worldwide. Available everywhere in Makrigialos for less than the mass produced stuff you would buy in your local supermarket !
Makrygialos has a small, lively harbour that comes alive at night with numerous local restaurants and cafes serving the freshest local food. This is not an area that is commercialised or abounds with nightclubs. If you want a taste of the real Crete, this is for you.
The natural beauty of the coast is simply staggering with deserted coves and bays seemingly round every turn. Local waterside tavernas welcome you with cool drinks and delicious food. The nearest towns of Ierapetra and Sitia both have bustling water fronts with cafes spilling out onto the promenades. Both have good shopping, but if you want to go a step further, Heraklion offers shopping to international standards. The area offers all manner of activities & water sports. Spinalonga, made famous by Victoria Hislop's novel is well worth a day trip.
All manner of water sports are available within easy reach, including scuba diving, fishing, sailing, etc..... Other nearby attractions include: The gorges of Pefki, Dasaki and Pevrolakia Water Park at Lerapetra Day boat trip to nearby Lefki island Wine-tasting at the Kaspa monastery Traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki. Makrigialos plays host to a very popular international music festival in June. From the port, there is also a boat which leaves each morning for the beautiful island of Koufonisi, returning late afternoon.
