The Crete region
Sun and sea, good food and history. What more could you ask for? Crete has all these to offer, and much, much more!
Crete is known for its beautiful sandy shores, magnificent mountains, quiet fishing villages and friendly people. The small fishing village of Makrigialos with its beautiful bay, long sandy beach and picturesque fishing harbour lies within the Prefecture of Lassithi in the east of the island. It offers gorgeous beaches, and a huge, lush plateau, covered in archaeological treasures and beautiful places to walk. This quiet, unspoiled region is the perfect place to take a relaxing, stress-free beach holiday, yet still be able to be a part of a traditional way of life.
With no fewer than 32 European Blue Flag beaches, whether you go in search of a secluded cove or a busier beach lined with bars and tavernas, you are certain to find a clean, safe beach to suit all tastes. Many offer water sports such as skiing, sailing, windsurfing and even scuba diving, as well as deep sea fishing off the shores of the island.
The inland regions of Lassithi are also remarkable and well worth a visit. Towering sandstone cliffs are scoured with deep valleys and deep, blue lakes, making it the ideal location for hang gliding, hiking, climbing, caving, mountain biking, fishing and walking. A breathtaking drive up winding roads into the mountains reveals the stunningly beautiful Lassithi Plateau, with its abandoned Venetian windmills and the Diktaean Cave, reputedly the birth place of Zeus.
For those wishing to explore Crete's history and archaeology, there are the ancient palaces at Phaestos, Knossoss (known to many a schoolchild for its association with the legend of the terrifying, flesh-eating Minotaur), Malia and the Venetian Harbour and Fortress at Heraklion.
Makrigialos area
Makrigialos (literally translates as "long Shore") is a popular but still unspoiled resort, and is an ideal spot for those searching for quiet holidays. With its excellent climate, (around 340 sunny days per year), beautiful landscape and warm hospitality its no wonder visitors come back year after year.
The long beach and several quiet sandy coves provide excellent conditions for swimmers of all experience, including children, due to the soft, gently shelving main beach and clean, crystal clear water. From the port there is a boat which leaves each morning (returning in the afternoon) for the White island ( Lefki or Koufonisia), where the remains of a Roman amphitheatre can be explored.
Makrigialos has a good supply of shops, tavernas, cafes, and water sport facilities, bars, a bank, pharmacy, doctor, dentist, car rental, florist and car service stations. There is a street market each Friday on the cross road to Agios Stefanos, near the harbour entrance.
In traditional tavernas meat, locally caught fish and other local dishes are served. In all restaurants & cafes, the quality of the food is truly excellent and the welcome second to none.
One of the best reasons for visiting Makrigialos in June has to be the fabulous Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival, held here in locations around the village. The Sixth Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival will take place from Friday 19th to Tuesday 23rd June 2009. Visit their website for more information.
Other places of interest: Agios Nikolaos – a picturesque resort where you can enjoy a laid back lunch, take in the Archaeological Museum which houses a modest collection of locally found artefacts or wander round the quayside. Sitia is within 30 minutes of Makrigialos and is well worth a visit, and the drive alone takes in some fantastic scenery. Agios Stefanos and Pefki, just two of the many beautiful mountain villages, steeped in history, with narrow winding streets, old and beautifully renovated stone houses smothered in Geraniums, Bougainvillea, and vines.
At the hotel complex across the road you can play tennis, crazy golf and table tennis.
