The Crete region
Crete is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands with over 1000kms of coastline.
It is the birthplace of Europe's earliest known civilisation, the Minoans, and hosts an array of cultures and history for the explorer. Its traditions and character have been created over many generations. There are superb mountain ranges, large coastal plains, secluded coves and gorges, and long sandy beaches to be experienced by visitors to this beautiful island.
The inhabitants are noted for their warm welcome as they share a bottle of Raki as a goodwill gesture of their hospitality.
Crete really is magical and has a climate which is one of Europe's best. Enjoy all that it has to offer and you will want to return time and time again!
The Makrigialos area
Makrigialos ('Long Beach') occupies its own bay in South East Crete, 25km (30 minutes drive) east of Ierapetra, along a coastline of secluded coves, and 35km south of Sitia in the Lassithi region. It is easily accessible from both of Crete's airports at Heraklion and Sitia, with its picturesque harbour and promenade, waterside tavernas, restaurants and cafes, the village is lively but still unspoilt.
Its beautiful bay, long sandy beach and crystal clear water are matched by the friendly local hospitality. Behind lie rolling hills with delightful panoramic views from out of the way villages where you can experience genuine ethnic cuisine. The many nearby attractions include the gorges of Pefki, Dasaki and Pevrolakia, water-park at Ierapetra, day boat trip to nearby Lefki island, wine tasting at the Kaspa monastery and traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki. Makrigialos also plays host to a popular music festival in June.

We first stayed at No1 Grapevines late September 2008 when the property was newly built and loved it - so much so that we are just back after our fifth visit. It really is a fantastic base to go and do nothing for a fortnight!! The property itself is luxurious and a far cry from my first visits to Greece - it really is a home from home you have all the facilities you could possibly need and the addition of a juicer this year meant fresh orange juice every morning. Internet access has been added this year too. Rosemary and Nikos, who look after the apartments, are always helpful and do a great job in keeping the apartments clean, and the grounds tidy. We've seen each year how the trees and plants have matured and it is lookiing lovelier each year. As for Makriaglos we find it just the right mix for complete relaxation with some great tavernas and bars and everyone is really friendly (and remember us each year now) There is a lovely sandy beach perfect for families with kids, and then an idillyic pebbly/sand beach about 10 minutes walk with the most gorgeous taverna tucked under the trees. There is some fantastic scenery around for day trips out - and Elounda/Aghios Nikoloas is about an hour - an hour and fifteen drive but worth it to visit Spinalonga for any of you who have read The Island. Lastly I must mention Peter and Barbara who own No1 - they have always been very helpful when booking directly with them. All in all I would heartily recommend a visit and I'm already planning my next one! Response: Thanks for your great review of Grapevines No1 villa and your fifth stay with us!! We look forward to seeing you again shortly and continuing your wonderful stays in Makrigialos. Thanks once again. Peter |

A few nights ago my family were channel surfing on the TV and we happened upon a programme about Greek food...amazingly, it featured Makrygialos. The presenter went to a 'typical' Greek restaurant in nearby Pefki and - as he grazed on spit-roasted lamb - I wanted to cry into my beans on toast. A month after ours hols and I still miss this place like you would not believe. The villas reminded me of those you'd find in a harbour in Cornwall; a bit cottagey and yet modern and I loved the fact they are behind an anonymous white wall so no one wanders in to disturb the peace. Loved sitting on the balcony watching the sun set over the mountains and being able to step outside the front door to a sunbed/ swimming pool. A perfect antidote to stress...designed so well, we felt at home after a few hours. The resort is splendid too. Blessed with so many great tavernas; we didn't have a disapppointing meal in any of them. But the most memorable ones were had at the taverna on nearby Diaskari beach (recommend the pork in red wine and the calamari) and - a little further flung - we had fresh fish Olondi in the harbour in Elounda. Also enjoyed cocktails at Fisherman Jacks in the village...but do make sure it's happy hour. The local giros Obelix take-away is brilliant and cheap enough to give your wallet a well-earned rest...ditto the next-door pizzeria. Thanks to Rosemary and Nikos who look after the villas and their tenants so well and to the owners of Number 1....it's a credit to them. Response: Many thanks for your excellent comments and glad that you enjoyed your stay at Makrigialos and particularly Grapevine Villas No.1. We look forward to being able to accommodate you and your family again in the future. Peter |
