The Lassithi Prefecture region

Makrigialos on the south east coast of Crete, is one of the quieter, less developed destinations on Crete. Far from the madding crowd of tourists, secluded in beautiful mountains with stunning sandy beaches overlooking the Libyan sea.

The region is an outstanding example of Cretan beauty and hospitality, offering all the amenities of modern life, yet retaining the feel of traditional village life. Makrigialos has one of the best climates in Europe, winters are short and mild, followed by long, warm, balmy summers.

Main towns in the region include Agios Nikolaus, Sitia and Ierapatra all with bustling water front cafes spilling out onto the promenades. Good shopping is also to be found, however if you want to go a step further, Heraklion offers shopping to international standards.

Spinalonga, the former leper colony, is well worth a visit, and from Ierapatra visitors can take a trip to Chrissi island, a very pleasant way to while away the hours and top up the tan.

For walkers, the gorges of Pefki and Dasaki are in the vicinity, and the magnificent Ha gorge, near Paphos Amos is a real challenge.

Water sports including water-skiing are available from the main beach and the Poseidon boat in the harbour, can be chartered for fishing trips and cruises to nearby Koufonisi island.

The Sasteria public Observatory in Agios Stefanos, in the mountains above Makrigialos, collects some impressive reviews as well as being the No 1 rated attraction in Crete by TripAdvisor. Music and dancing events are staged throughout the summer, including traditional Cretan nights and the prestigious Casa dei Mezzo music festival.

Makrigialos has a small, lively harbour that comes alive at night with numerous local restaurants and cafes serving the freshest food from local produce.

This is not an area that is commercialised or abounds with nightclubs. If you want a taste if the real Crete, this is for you.

"A Little bit of Paradise"

From the booking of the holiday through to the last day everything was exactly as planned and stated which is refreshing. The Loft is a fantastic little oasis in Makrigailos and the roof terrace is a huge plus with awesome views and sunsets. As a consequence we spent every evening cooking and enjoying the terrace and sunsets to the full. The apartment is very accessible and within easy walking distance of local beaches and coves and it is an ideal family holiday and highly recommendable.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We are delighted you enjoyed your holiday at The Loft, and especially the stunning views from the roof terrace. Hopefully see you again soon. Julie and Steve

"Fantastic accommodation, great facilities and ideal location"

The images on the website raised our expectations, which is always a danger, however we were certainly not disappointed, the apartment was exactly how it looks fantastic! The kids especially liked the swimming pools! Booking the appt with Steve and Julie was a breeze, they were both very responsive and helpful. Makrigialos itself is a great location, not too touristy but still enough bars and restaurants to ensure you can eat and drink at a different place every night if you want to. We especially liked Olympio bar for lunch or to use the beach facilities, diskari beach and taverna for a day at the beach with hammocks and both dragons cave and Petra bay were our favourite restaurants, but its fair to say we didn't have a bad experience anywhere. Overall a great holiday, we will be back.

Thank you so much for your comments. We always strive to offer our guests the highest possible degree of service, and of course to offer The Loft as a very high standard of luxury accommodation. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

"Rejuvenating the batteries in style"

On a whim I decided that despite having never traveled or driven abroad alone, I needed a breather. I contacted Steve/Julie on the Saturday and arrived the next day. To say they were outstanding in both their response to the initial enquiry and the multitude of emails I sent is an understatement. Nothing was too much trouble. I was given details of car hire, places to visit/eat, directions to the house, arrangements for key pickup. Everything I needed to ensure I arrived safely (which thankfully I did) The villa itself is breathtaking. Beautifully furnished with everything you'd need for a relaxed stay. Even a welcoming bottle of wine, beer, milk and choc ices. You will need to hire a car whilst there as it's not walking distance to anywhere but that was the charm in choosing it in the first place. Seclusion, quiet and a beach within 5 mins walk. There is also another beach less than 5 mins drive that has a taverna alongside. As a rule I don't usually write reviews but in this instance Steve and Julie deserve a glowing review. The accommodation, location, assistance given was first class and worth every penny. I for one, will certainly return with a smile. Well done. For my first ever solo trip, it was an amazing success and one I'll look back on with fond memories in years to come. Bea x

Thanks for your very kind comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that your first solo expedition was a success.
