One bedroom village house, sleeps 2, although a guest bed could be used in the lounge. Accommodation comprises one bedroom with double bed (air-conditioning available in this room), corridor/balcony over pathway with small table and two chairs, wet room with shower, toilet and hand-wash basin, living room/kitchen, fully equipped kitchen, L-shaped comfortable sofa, wooden table and four chairs, small TV (satellite dish receiving English-language news and film channels), DVD and CD player, landline and internet. Small wood-burning stove for cooler winter evenings. Spiral staircase to sunroof, sunbeds, small plastic table and four chairs. Spectacular sea and mountain views.

Ideal as base for exploring eastern Crete's hiking trails, archaeological sites, safe beaches and beautiful unspoilt coves whilst experiencing authentic village life. Aghios Stefanos is a working village, 400 metres above sea level seven kilometres up into the mountains above the coastal town of Makrigialos. The village produces olive oil, raki, wine, fruit and veg (oil is mostly sold commercially, but the other produce is for the villagers' own use). The population of around 100 permanent residents is boosted by holiday home owners, both Greek and other Europeans, at holiday times. The cafes with their tables outside on the two village squares (the main church square and a smaller one half-way up the village) are the meeting places for both Greeks and foreigners in the evenings, although the cafes on the main square are open all day long. Once parked in either of the two parking areas there is no vehicle access to the village, which has small pathways, wide enough for pedestrians and donkeys only. However, there is plentiful parking either at the square at the bottom of the village (to walk up) or at the top (to walk down and preferable with luggage)

The Crete region

Situated on the south-east coast of Crete, the region offers opportunities for walking, hiking and exploring archaelogical sites. Ierapetra is on the south coast and is about 35 minutes away by car and Sitia is on the north coast and about 45 minutes away by car. There is also a good and inexpensive bus service from Makrigialos to both towns. Market days are Saturday in Ierapetra and Tuesday in Sitia, both markets attract locals and tourists alike and are well worth a visit. For sun-lovers there is also the possibility of a boat trip from Ierapetra spending several hours on Krissi Island.

This area has numerous opportunities for walking and, for the braver, hiking in the numerous gorges. The neighbouring mountain villages of Pefki and Stavrohori are about 4 and 7 kilometres from Aghios Stefanos and also have very good tavernas. Makri Gialos is the nearest beach resort and is 7 km down a scenic mountain road (with 7 hairpin bends) from Agios Stephanos. It has wonderfully safe beaches with a nicely restored harbour area. There are numerous restaurants both along the long beach and in the harbour area. There are also banks, pharmacies and supermarkets. The beaches offer varying swimming opportunities, from the child-friendly beaches at Makrigialos to the rather sharper descending beaches for the experienced swimmer just beside that town. There are other secluded coves to be discovered and many have a restaurant close by.

This is not an area for you if you are looking for night life - the restaurants stay open until the last customer leaves, but there are no night clubs within easy reach. It is an area which appeals to young families, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone wishing to relax.
