The Crete region

If you want to avoid manicured resorts, like getting away from it all (but not too far), and dislike crowds on holiday, then Makrigialos is the place for you. It's a very special place, peaceful and unhurried, surrounded by some inspiring untouched countryside. Its harbour area is small and compact, and above all friendly. Just pop into any promenade café or bar to find out!

Makrigialos occupies its own bay in South East Crete, along a coastline of secluded coves and quiet easy-to-get-to fine beaches. With its picturesque harbour and promenade, waterside tavernas, restaurants and cafes, the village is lively but still unspoiled. Makrigialos claims to be blessed with the best weather in all of Crete and there is no doubt the micro-climate gives it a great advantage over other areas as it also has some of the best unspoiled beaches, deserted coves and bays. Its beautiful bay, long sandy beach and crystal clear water are matched by the friendly local hospitality. You will be assured of a warm welcome wherever you go!

Adjacent to Analipsi, Makrigialos was once a tiny fishing village, but is now an established popular resort due to the friendly local hospitality, with visitors returning year after year. The name "Makrigialos" means "long beach", and here you will find a long sandy beach with crystal clear, shallow waters, which is perfect for children. The beach is lined with a good variety of tavernas to suit all tastes as is the fishing port, which is the most picturesque part of the village.

Behind Makrigialos lie rolling hills with delightful panoramic views from out of the way villages where you can experience genuine ethnic cuisine. You'll have a great time sampling locally produced fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, wine, and of course the finest olive oil in the World.

This is a tourist spot that is hardly touched by the package holiday trade as local planning aims to protect the local culture and prevent large scale development. There are of course some hotels, and these allow our guests to take advantage of their facilities, such as tennis courts, mini-golf, beach sports, and internet cafe.

Shops and village facilities

There are many excellent small shops where you can browse at your leisure. Supermarkets here are worth exploring as they have hidden recesses where you may find the odd treasure. The nearest is about 50m downhill. Fresh local vegetables are best bought at the fruit & veg shop opposite the baker's across the road from Villea Village. If you are looking for local wine then the fruit & veg shop is surprisingly good value. Local produce includes herbs, honey, saffron, and raki.

The larger supermarkets in Ierapetra and Koutsouras are slightly cheaper and all have good quality produce. You can also go to Lidl in Ierapetra - easy parking, air conditioning and the wine is much cheaper.

Souvenirs

There are a number of shops in the village selling good quality products. Christine's favourite sells some lovely art and glass, but she usually seems to come out every time with a new pair of earrings!

Wines and Spirits

Good quality local wines such as Sitia or Kritikos Topikos Oinas can be purchased at any supermarket, cafe or taverns. Other reliable Greek wines are logardo, Minos Cava, Olympias or Lac de Roche. Imported spirits are fairly expensive so most people change to Greek brandy, Metaxa (available in several octanes, 2, 3 and 7 star); Anise-flavoured Ouzo makes a good aperitif and a good complement to evening meze. Greeks drink it straight or, on a very hot day, with an ice cube. No one will frown if you add water, turning it a milky colour. Finally Raki, the local firewater, normally drunk with a meze.

Post

Stamps (grammatosima) can be obtained from supermarkets and other shops selling postcards. There are post boxes in the village with the nearest post office in Koutsouras, 2km from Makrigialos.

Telephones

There is a box just outside Grapevines. It takes a card which can be bought at the supermarket.

Banks

There are 3 ATMs and 2 banks in the village. Both are located in the centre of the village. Opening hours are 9:30 to 13:00 Monday to Friday. No Saturday opening. There is also an ATM machine outside of the reception of the Sunwing Hotel across the road from the villas.

Pharmacy

At the bottom of the hill leading up to the Grapevines complex. Opening hours are 8:30 to 13:30 and 17:30 to 21:00. There is also a pharmacy in nearby Koutsouras.

Doctor The local (NHS equivalent) doctor's surgery is located at the far end of the village near the harbour. Open most mornings and some evenings; they will accept the European Health Card. There is also a private medical surgery next to the pharmacy at the bottom of the hill leading up to Grapevines, and here you will have to pay.

Dentist

Surgery is at the far end of the village 100 metres before the Shell petrol station.

Activities and Exploring

Many activities are available locally. These include tennis, mini-golf, a range of beach sports, banana boats, water skiing, sailboat hire, quad bikes, mountain bikes, motor boats, horse-riding (Ierapetra), aqua park (Heraklion). Wine-tasting at the Kaspa monastery is a popular outing. Many of our guests have enjoyed the day boat trip from Makrigialos harbour to nearby Koufonissi island.

For younger children there is a mini-quad bike track and soft play area.

There are many beautiful walks in the area. It's a good habit to take a small bottle of water with you. One of our favourite walks is simply to stroll along the promenade past the harbour and up to the headland for views over the bay.

Spinalonga

Excursion boats leave every hour from the harbour in Agios Nikolaos. Some include an all day excursion with BBQ. You can also go from Elounda. There is a small entrance fee to Spinalonga and guides are available for hire. If you've read 'The Island' this is definitely worthwhile.

Ierapetra

Ierapetra is about a half hour drive west from Makrigialos, is the fourth largest town in Crete, and is the only major town on the south coast. Its ancient harbour which goes back to Roman times is still a working port. It has a traffic free promenade with seafront cafes, plenty of shops and a covered market. The local Summer festival, Kirvia, has many events focused on music, dance, theatre and art. There are boat trips to Chrissi island (or 'Gaidouronissi' – 'Donkey Island', from the old tradition of retiring donkeys on uninhabited islands), a tiny picturesque uninhabited island of cedar forest, with an old chapel of St. Nicholas and white sandy beaches, just 8 miles off the port of Ierapetra.

Sitia

We like Sitia! It is a very pleasant drive up to the north coastal town, a typical small Mediterranean port, built around a semicircular bay with a sandy town beach. Everyone seems to head there about 5 o'clock after the day's work is done. In the evening the harbour area bustles with tourists and the locals out for a stroll or heading for the many cafes and tavernas which provide mainly Greek cuisine.

Vai

From Sitia take a drive to the thick palm tree-lined beach at Vai. This is the beach in the 'Bounty' commercial.

Gorge walks

Butterfly Gorge A walk of about 3 miles or 5km either starting at the Koutsouras Community Park or a gate off the main road to Orino (about 6 miles or 10 km from Koutsouras. Some scrambling involved but otherwise reasonably well signposted. It is not a circular walk.

Pervolakia Gorge

The Kapsa or Pervolakia Gorge is about 9kms from Makrigialos. Access the Gorge either by the Moni Kapsa Monestary or from the coast road. There is a small beach on the other side of the road allowing you to cool off after the heat of the gorge.
