The Crete region
The ancient centre of Europe's oldest civilisation, Crete is now one of its most popular tourist destinations, partly due to the beautiful weather all year round and the spectacular historic sites. Why not visit the Palace of Knossos? This was the residence of the legendary King Minos c.1550. The labyrinth in which the Minotaur was imprisoned is said to have been possibly derived from the floor plan of the Palace
Or you could take a trip to the Heraklion Museum which houses the world's most spectacular and magnificent collection of Minoan art and culture. The collection covers a period of 5000 years, spanning from the from neolithic era to the Graeco Roman period.
For something completely different then don't miss the Samaria Gorge National Park. This is 16km long and starts at an altitude of 1250m and takes you all the way down to the shores of the Libyan sea in Agia Roumeli. The gorge itself is found in the White Mountains in West Crete.
There is always the option of a trip to Spinalonga (Kalydon) Island too!
Makrigialos area
In addition to taking time by the pool and soaking up the view, you could hit the harbour for lunch as there are many little cafes there. You could also:
Visit the Water City and Acqua Plus - two water parks in the nearby area. Perfect for if you are travelling with children, or the young at heart!
Take a boat trip to Koufonisi island a small island off the south eastern coast of Crete in the Libyan sea. This island is covered in parts in a dense sand and reminds you of the landscape of an African desert.. Archaeological digs have discovered a whole colony laying buried under the sands.
Take a walk among the many beautiful and easily accessible gorges and mountain pine forests. Or visit Kapsa Monastery, and the historic villages of Skinokapsala, Orino and Pervolakia.
