The Crete region

Crete Makrigialos Lassithi: The coastal village of Makrigialos is lying 24 kilometres east of Ierapetra and 63 kilometres south-east of Agios Nikolaos, in the centre of Kala Nera (Good Waters) Bay. Because of its long white sandy beach and its crystalline blue waters, Makrigialos has developed into one of the most important tourist resorts of the area. In the village, some archaeological excavations have brought to light ruins of a Minoan Mansion. Kapsa Monastery is located 7 km east of Makrigialos. It was founded in the 15th century and was restored in the 19th century by monk Gerontogiannis, who lived in a close cave. During the Second World War, it helped people to get into submarines and leave for Egypt. The monastery celebrates on August 29th.

Makrigialos, Crete - a village away from mass tourism

Makrigialos is a find, some way from any major or developed tourist towns.

The older-seeming harbor area has some character-full cafes and tavernas.

Though it virtually merges with the neighboring village of Analipsi, where the main beach is, the two are different in character. Both parts of what is now really the same village, are framed in front of an impressive mountain backdrop with gorges that are more accessible and every bit as rewarding as the Samaria Gorge.

The large sweep of sandy beach offers a selection of hotels, apartments and rooms for rent. It also has some well conceived and decorated restaurants, cafes and bars, feels casually-stylish in the evenings and also provides a local and not excessively tourist-trodden atmosphere.

At the western end of the village, the remains of an impressive villa dating back to the Late Geometric period have been uncovered. The Romans also valued Makrigialos' strategic position very highly, which explains why the remains of a Roman villa have also been uncovered here.

Makrigialos has at least 3 ATM machines. The nearest to Bay View is at the Sun Wing complex. There is a pharmacy on the way into the village, and a medical centre at the other end of the village. Makrigialos also has a large selection of restaurants and bars, serving excellent food, very reasonably priced. Scuba diving, fishing and sailing are available nearby. A visit to the gorges of Pefki, Dasaki or Pevrolakia make a good day out for those who enjoy hiking. Other options are the boat trip from the harbour in Makrigialos to Lefki island, wine-tasting at the Kaspa monastery, the palm-forest beach at Vai or traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki. There are five separate beaches in the immediate Makrigialos area. From west to east, the first is Kalamokania, separated from the main beach by a headland. In the bay proper is the main beach, which is blue flag accredited and which stretches eastwards from the harbour for half a mile, providing golden sand and safe shallow bathing. Two smaller coved beaches a little further round the bay, including the blue flag Lagoufa beach, serve the hotel complex there. These and the main beach offer a range of water sports facilities in the summer season. A short walk further on, over another headland, brings you to Diaskari beach. Refreshments, sunbeds and umbrellas are available at all beaches. During the summer season there are a range of watersports available, ranging from pedal boats to jet-skis, both from the main beach and from the beach below the hotel complex, and being sat on an inflatable cushion whilst it is dragged at speed behind a speed boat appears to be quite popular. For the less suicidal, fishing boat charters are available from the main harbour, and the Sofia runs excursions to the nearby uninhabited island of Koufonisi. Every June the town hosts the prestigious Casa dei Mezzo music festival. The nearby village of Agios Stefanos is home to the Sasteria public observatory and art workshop. The private observatory Sasteria works all year round and gives the visitor a unique opportunity to see the wonders of the sun and the night sky.

"fantastic location"

the apartment is quite small but in a fantastic location, the pools are great and well maintained. The surroundings are so lovely, you won't be spending a huge amount of time in the apartment. T… More

"Good apartment with a pool in a quiet part of the island"

We actually stayed at Bayview in September 2011, but TripAdvisor doesn't allow for people who procrastinate quite so long over reviews! The apartment was great and within easy driving distance of Makrygialos for its shops and restaurants (we hired a car to get ourselves around). In September the pool was quiet as not many other residents or guests were around. Bayview made a good base from which to explore the local area. The only downside to our stay was that in late September the weather was just turning, so we had a couple of cooler or rainy days.
