The Bayview development is only 300 from the beach and boasts beautifully landscaped gardens.
The Crete region
East Crete remains largely undeveloped with beautiful examples of local Cretian life around every corner. The small amount of development that has taken place is typically around some of the stunning beaches which are known as the best on the Island. Whilst Makrigialos boasts some of the best beaches in the whole of Crete, others that will blow you away are a short drive East from Bay View
.Xerokambos is a 40 minute drive over the mountains. As you descend down the wide winding road its easy to imagine being in an episode of Top Gear with the most fabulous backdrop. Once in Xerokambos, you'll find a charming village that whilst tourism is clearly visible, it mixes at ease with local life. It's clear to see that those that have discovered Xerokmabos beach have kept that little secret to themselves. Other notable beaches a little further a field are Zakros Bay and Vai Bay.
Sitia, to the north of Makrigialos is the biggest Town in the area and a 30 minute drive on a good road with stunning panoramic views over the olive tree filled mountains. Sitia has everything you would expect from a large Town and has a plentiful supply of Banks, large Supermarkets and gift shops. The fishing harbour is lined with stylish restaurants serving local dishes as well as international cuisine.
Makrigialos is located in South East Crete which benefits from the North African climate with around 330 days of sun per year. Sheltered from Northerly winds by the granite mountains, the warm dry Summers last well into the North European Autumn months, and the Christmas/New Year period can be a nice time to visit. The area recorded unusually high temperatures of up to 27°C during Christmas/New Year 2009.
January and February tend to see average temperatures drop to around 14°C, however temperatures start to rise again from March/April.
The Bay View complex was completed in 2009 and has been designed to the highest quality. The landscaping is outstanding, and all apartments are south facing overlooking the Bay of Makrigialos.
The views of the sun setting into the Mediterranean Sea are stunning and will be one of the many things you'll remember about your holiday.
The swimming pool is free to use for all guests, and features a shallow area for toddlers and young children which gradually gets deeper.
A hire car is recommended as the remote peaceful location means that stocking up on those everyday items for the fridge would be difficult. We would also recommend a car to explore the largely undeveloped East Crete, however if you would prefer to spend your holiday without a car, there is a basic bus service and taxi's are easily available.
The apartment has one reserved parking space, however if for any reason you require an additional space we should be able to arrange that for you at no additional cost.
Makrigialos is a small and typically Cretion fishing village. It's small harbour is home to the local's fishing boats and they can be seen heading out to sea early in the morning. With the ocean in front of you and the mountains behind, Makrigialos is said to have its own micro climate in it's uniquely sheltered location.
The harbour is also home to a small number of pleasure boats which will take you on an exploration of this wonderful coast line. The Bay View reception will be pleased to help you to plan any excursions whilst in the resort.
In the summer months Makrigialos has something for everyone. From the lazy beach front Taverna's around the harbour, to the rather exclusive bars on the edge of the village. Out of season many of the shops, bars and restaurants on the outskirts of the village shut down for winter and most of the activity centre's around the harbour.
The beautiful paths through the whitewashed houses connect this area with the through road where you will also find supermarkets and restaurants open all year round. You will find some leaflets in the apartment of places that we particularly recommend.
The nearest bars and restaurants to Bay View are approximately 2km away, and the harbour is approximately 3km. There are a small number of Taverna's within walking distance and the Bay View reception will be happy to direct you.
The Bay of Makrigialos boasts the longest shallow sandy beach in East Crete. Other beaches within a similar distance are Diaskari, Langada,Amoudi, Mavros Kolimbos, Galini and Koutsouras; some of them are commercial beaches and some are deserted
East Crete is also a great area for walking with many Gorges attracting hikers to the area in the shoulder seasons. These are generally well signposted with easy access, and the Bay View reception will be happy to provide information and directions.
There are also many archaeological sites in East Crete with some of the artefacts that have been discovered on display at the Hellenic Archaeological Museum in Agios Nikolaos. It is possible to visit a Minoan site in Makrigialos where the foundations to a country house are still in place.
There are many Minoan villages in East Crete and most of them are signposted from the main roads. They tend to be in quite rural areas where they were created away from the pirates, so access is part car/part walk. You should expect a 15 minute walk each way to visit some of the most rural mountain Minoan villages.
