The Dalmatia region
Dalmatia is a region on the eastern coast of Adriatic Sea, situated in Croatia. With only 50 km wide at its widest part, it is mostly a coastal region characterized by its coves, secluded beaches, islands and inlets. Due to the rugged coastline and numerous islands of all sizes and topographies, diving, yachting, kayaking and other outdoor activities are very popular in this part of Croatia. Dalmatian coast is known for its warm sea, constant winds and beautiful wooded islands.
Located on the coastal slopes of the mountain slope above the village Kotišina at the altitude of 350-500 meters and is an integral part of nature park mountain.
The garden was founded by Dr. Fra Jure Radic (1920-1990), a Franciscan priest and scientist, with the purpose of scientific research and monitoring, protection and preservation, and popularization and introduction of plant life of the mountain slope. Biokovski botanical garden is a botanical garden in the classic sense, where each plant brought by certain rules, but is intended as "an enclosed piece of nature", which will retain the natural vegetation forms with the autochthonous flora. For a relatively small area of ??16.5 ha are very diverse habitats such as rock, screes, rletne rocks, arable land, and with the same name Proslap canyon waterfall, which is most of the year is dry, and alive during heavy rains.
On the surface Biokovo botanical garden Kotišina was found about 300 wild plant species, typical of the Mediterranean to the mountains, and in some areas were planted exotics, agricultural and medicinal herbs. Among the perennials that grow particularly impressive Iris pseudopallida Trinajsti? - Adriatic irises in spring, when the whole garden replavljen her big, beautiful violet flowers. The Dalmatian is endemic to the family Iridaceae. It grows on the rocks, rubble and along paths in the garden are many.
In the fall of Saint Michael blooms white or light pink flowers of Cyclamen hederifolium Aiton. - Neapolitan Cyclamen from the family Primulaceae, which in summer is wholly devoid of the overhead portions, a summer drought and heat to survive in the form of underground stem (bulb). Its flowers, which appear before the scrolling to be shyly hiding among loose rock material on rubble.
In spring and early summer garden is luxurious and abundant colorful flowers, while at other times of year it can always find a few hidden flower.
Through the garden leads to several hiking trails, and at the main entrance in the rock are carved the words.
Near the entrance to the garden, along the cliff, the walls are large Kastela - fortification building from the 17th century, which impresses with its appearance.
At the site of the present church of Sv. Ante at Kotišina which was built in the period since 1901. to 1903. , was the old church, for which there is information that in 1672. was restored, but since it is nothing but a preserved inscription is a memorial built into the apse of the church of today, which speaks of the consecration of the church that made the 27th 4th 1681st, during the Turkish rule of the Bishop Lišnji?.
