Enquire nowThe Limousin / Auvergne / Creuse region
The Creuse is a department within the region of Limousin. It is noted for its beautiful unspoilt rolling countryside, its rivers and lakes. The houses in its hamlets and villages, built with the local granite have a timeless quality. Agriculture is the main occupation of many of the residents and the small fields are populated with the white Charolais cows. La Creuse is situated just north west of the Massive Central, an ancient volcanic area and on a clear day the mountains of Sancy and the Puy de Dome can be seen in the distance. The market town of Aubusson, the nearest large town, is famous for its tapestries, some of which are displayed in its contemporary museum. Limoges, the capital of the Limousin is well known for its porcelain.
The Mainsat area
Mainsat is our local village, about 2 kms away. It has a restaurant, two bakers, a pharmacy, a post office, a butcher, two garages, both selling petrol and diesel and a mini supermarket. There is a market held in the church square on the last Saturday of the month. Auzances is a larger town, 15 minutes drive away. There you will find a bigger supermarket with several other shops, banks and restaurants. Auzances has a market every Tuesday morning. Things to do in the area include swimming in local swimming lakes, some of which have beaches and bar / restaurants, others much more low key, swimming pools, horse riding, golf (Gouzon), walking, fishing, cycling, painting, Volcania (visit the inside of a volcano), Puy Dome (the home of Vovic water), Canoeing, tree activity parks, thermal spa town of Evaux les bains, museums, art galleries, castles, historic towns, village fetes and markets, farm visits. We are both practising artists and can offer one to one tuition if you fancy trying your hand at some painting and drawing.

By air, Limoges is the nearest airport, about 1hour 45 mins drive away (140kms). It is served by Ryan air and Flybe from several UK airports including Stansted, Liverpool, Southampton, Bristol, East Midlands and Newcastle. Car hire is available at Limoges airport. we are happy to provide you with details on how to reach us from the airport.
By car/ferry:euro tunnel. We tend to cross the channel at Calais because it is a quicker and cheaper crossing, though there are many other options. Calais is about 8 hours drive away with stops. There are two main ways to get down to us, either coming around Paris on the motorways or avoiding Paris and going via Rouen and Chartres. This is the more scenic route but the roads are still very good. The magnificant cathedral town of Chartres makes a good half way stop off point - either for lunch or even over night.

We have just returned from our stay at Pellovisin, and we had a fantastically relaxing holiday. The gite is set on Tom and Sue's smallholding and we were able to purchase fresh organic seasonable vegetables, eggs and fruit, which we cooked on the gas hob and oven. There are a multitude of markets to choose from close to the village, which we took advantage of to get local cheeses, wines and meat. We felt like we'd had a taste of the real France. Set in beautiful countryside surrounded by small farms there are many scenic walks nearby. We only managed to do a few in between eating cheese and drinking wine whilst looking out at the wonderful views, but those were lovely, with plenty of wildlife to spot. There are swimming lakes within a few miles that were very welcome to cool off on hot days. We travelled with our 11 month old daughter and 5 year old dog. We were superbly looked after, and would not hesitate in recommending this holiday gite. We hope to return soon. |
