The Mauritius East Coast/Grand Port region

Closest to the only airport, Mahébourg is a small town on the southeastern shores of the country's biggest lagoon..It has a population of more than 15,700 (figures from the 2000 census) and is part of the Grand-Port district It is one of the most authentic and traditional towns in Mauritius and is named after Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, one of the most successful governors of the French colonial period. It was built in 1806 during the French colonisation era.The well-planned wide streets in the old section of Mahébourg still bear testimony to this French colonial past. After the French chose Port Louis as the main port , Mahébourg declined into a sleepy coastal city. The past is still preserved today in the Historical Naval Museum which also recounts the epic naval battles of the past between the French Navy and the Royal Navy. The Dutch historical museum in Grand Port village recounts the early Dutch settlement of the island.

Still exuding the charms of bygone times, Mahebourg is without doubt the most Mauritian of all Mauritian towns;Unusual in its mix of colonial and Creole architecture, Mahébourg is a coastal village . here, the visitor can find colonial mansions beside mosques, quiet roads with small shops and lots of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables at the market by the central bus station. The Naval Museum, Rault biscuit factory and waterfront are definitely a must to see.

Mahébourg is perfect for strolls along the coast where you can admire the views of ile du Mouchoir Rouge, île de la Passe, île au Phare , as well as ile aux Aigrettes. It is possible to visit some of these islands. The bay is of particular interest as it harboured the historic battle of Grand Port. On some Sundays you may see a pirogue regatta.

With its period porcelain collection, ancient maps and bells from wrecked sailing ships, the Mahébourg Naval Museum is well worth a visit. In the very old and rambling colonial mansion, artifacts from centuries past bear witness to an era when the British fought the French in great naval battles.

A little further down the road, on a totally different theme, is theBiscuiterie Rault, founded in 1870, making it the oldest biscuit factory in Mauritius. As well as learning a few things about how the famous biscuits Manioc are made from cassava flour, after the tour you will be able to try this local delicacy with a delicious cup of Mauritian tea.
