We are situated in Lower Normandy, about 1 hour south of Caen and also within easy reach of Le Mont St Michel. The area is rich in history, notably concerning William the conqueror and more recently the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War 2.
The cottage is surrounded by lovely countryside, forests and beautiful villages. Within a 5 minute car drive is a man-made lake with supervised beach and shower and toilets.
Normandy is famous for horse rearing and there are various excursions available. The National Stud at Haras le Pin has a wonderful display of horsemanship every week in the summer and the beautiful Percheron horses can also be seen in a more rural setting with yet another marvellous display at a local farm.
Of course, it goes without saying that Normandy also offers gastronomic delights in it's delicious dairy produce and of course the famous cider and calvados.
Generally speaking this area tends to have slightly warmer summers and slightly colder winters than in the UK and in order to be well-prepared for the climate one should regard the weather as likely to be similar to that of Britain.
The cottage is situated in a rural setting but is within easy reach of local markets and shops.
The Magny le Desert area
During the summer months there are various festivals, the principal of which is the Bastille Day Firework Display at Bagnoles. This is a free display on the 14th July but other towns will also have their own free displays and often on different nights so that you can attend as many as you like. The tourist ofices have all the details.
Briouze, about 16 km from the cottage has a Pop festival in July and there are various other music and arts festivals, the details of which can be found in the tourist office and in the gite guest handbook.
The Normandy Landing Beaches are about 1 hour away by car and a visitor pass can be purchased at your first port of call giving reduced entry fees into any other sites or museums visited. The pass lasts for 1 year so there is plenty of time to pack lots of sightseeing into your stay.
The chateau of Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror is about 45 minutes from the cottage and is well worth a visit.
For the golf fanatics there is a good course at Bagnoles, about 10 km away from the cottage.
Various fishing lakes can be found in the area and of course, there is sea fishing at the coast.

My husband and I travelled with our two children aged 12 and eight and we had a fantastic time staying in Le Brindossiere. We were very lucky with the weather as it was very hot the whole week we were there. The Gite: is the perfect size for a family of four. It's very clean with a toilet both upstairs and down, which is unusal for a gite and very handy with two children. The kitchen is well equipped even with a dishwasher, which was bliss. There is a big garden surrounding the entire gite which is totally enclosed with a parking bay for the car. You'd have no fear of your little ones escaping! The garden was also perfect for playing games with the children ie. stool ball and badminton. There is also a BBQ with garden furniture. There is relevant information for you to read through ie. emergency telephone numbers, places to go, how appliances work etc, which we found very useful. The area: although quite a drive to the beaches, which can be done, there was a lake five minutes away with a sandy beach which our children loved. We went there every day and hardly spent any money all week - 'bonus'. There was a Lidl supermarket opposite the lake which was very handy, but also in the same town there was a Carrefour supermarket which has alot more to offer and is open until 20.00 hrs every night except sunday. The Owners: Ted and Cheryl are a lovely attentive couple. They paid us a visit the day we arrived and told us about the history of the gite, which was fascinating, and also the best places to go. They couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. I would definitely recommend this gite to families. |
