The Balearic Islands region
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic islands, the most popular and best known. It is often likened to a continent rather than simply as an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes, it isn't surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits. No other European island boasts a more contrasting terrain from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost Alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the North/West and across to the gentle hills of the Levante on the East coast.
The city of Palma became the capital of the Balearic Islands in 1983. It is a delightful city to wander around, along its narrow streets and high storey houses stopping off at bars and cafes to sample the local wines and tapas. Palma is a vibrant, cultural and cosmopolitan capital city. Often referred to as 'Little Barcelona'. There are a number of prestigious art galleries and museums, aswell as venues for open air concerts.
