The Mallorca/Majorca region

For a day out, many people on holiday in Calvia will head for the main city of Palma. It has a history stretching back many hundreds of years, which encompass both Moorish and Spanish rule. There is an impressive castle here, the Beliver Castle, as well as a magnificent cathedral built on the foundations of an old mosque. Leaving Palma behind, perhaps a day trip over to the other side of Majorca could be taken. Here, Puerto Pollenca still retains its charm, and again has some wonderful old buildings. Farther along that eastern coast is the town of Porto Cristo. Here, a trip into two wonderful caves can be taken, where the stalactites and stalagmites will conjure up feelings of being in a different world.

Beaches. At Andratx the coastline is craggy and indented. Most of the beaches here are short, surrounded by rocky hills and with gradual inclines. A couple of the best are Camp de Mar and Cala Llamp. At Calvia the seafront is more varied, with both compact bays and long sandy beaches – Platja de Palmanova extends for more than a kilometre and is blessed with all kinds of facilities and services.

-Mountain activities. Just to the north the terrain is one of steep mountains and fragrant pine forest, where herds of sure-footed goats are free to roam. The Serra de Tramuntana is laced with walking trails, some challenging and some short and gentle. Just above Andratx there's a trail that will guide you along the mountain ridge for wonderful views of the coast at Port de Andratx.

-Golf. If there's one sport that Majorca does best it's golf. The western coast in Majorca has a handful of exciting courses. Andratx has a course at Camp de Mar, with 18 of the most challenging holes in the entire Balearic region. This is partly down to the steep terrain, which can make the going tricky but creates a stunning setting for a game of golf.

-Food and drink. The western side of Majorca is especially upmarket and there are plenty of sophisticated eateries to be found. Top of the list for many is Tristan in Puerto Portals, which has held two Michelin stars for more than two decades. Self-catering in Majorca is a dream because of the local markets that sell high-quality produce – there's a weekly market in Calvia on Mondays, and one in Andratx on Wednesdays.

-Palma. Palma boasts sightseeing, culture, shopping and dining that shouldn't be neglected. If you'd like to experience an authentic Mediterranean old town you could visit the old centre here with its Moorish architecture and cool, shaded streets. Placa de Mallorca is always full of life and lined with elegant tall houses with arcaded walkways lined with restaurants..

Magaluf

Majorca is blessed with excellent weather, meaning that a holiday in Calvia can be taken at almost any time of year. Of course, the summer months are the most popular, where daytime high temperatures can peak at over 30 degrees Celsius, and are consistently above 24 degrees. The winter months see top temperatures of 15 degrees, and rainfall for the entire year measures less than 21 inches.

Each year over 1 million holidaymakers visit Magalluf, a seaside resort located in the southwest corner of the Spanish island of Majorca (Mallorca). Set around the beautiful Palma Bay, Magalluf is a bustling resort with activities for all ages. The gorgeous weather, beautiful white beaches and lively atmosphere make Magalluf the perfect place to rent a holiday villa or apartment.

Crystal clear water laps the long, white stretch of sand at Magalluf beach. It's the ideal place to soak up the Mediterranean sun. You can also hire a pedalo that will get you to Lizard Island (Isla de Sa Porrassa), which lies just off Magalluf beach. Along the length of the beach is a wide promenade, lined with hotels, bars and restaurants.

Water sports in Magalluf include windsurfing, boat charters, jet skiing and snorkeling. Scuba diving in Magalluf is another great way to spend the day on a beach holiday. Dive centers in the area have daily excursions for those who want to go scuba diving in Magalluf.

If you plan to party your holiday away then Magalluf is just the place for you. The Punta Ballena strip has numerous bars and some clubs that have a variety of music to suit a variety of tastes. Heavy competition in the area means drinks are cheap. The vibrant nightlife makes Magalluf a popular holiday destination for young, budget-conscious travelers.

Other popular activities include nearby water parks, Aqualand and Western Water Park, as well as the Pirates adventure dinner and show. There is also great entertainment for kids at a kart track near Aqualand, as well as at the fascinating upside-down mansion called “The House of Katmandu”.
