The Koh Samui region
Located in the gulf of Thailand about 80km off the mainland coast is the magical holiday island of Koh Samui. At roughly 25km x 21km it is Thailand's third largest island. A mountain ridge runs east to west and the inner hills of the island are mostly covered in trees. The island is beautifully green, the rich hues of the forest and natural vegetation contrasting with the greens of coconut palms and banana leaves. Samui has an abundance of white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and swaying coconut palms.
The weather is generally hot and humid all year round. It's usually hottest between March and September when the temperature often reaches 35C. It tends to rain more during the 'monsoon' which runs roughly from mid-October to mid-December. Samui is a great place to visit all year round and even when it rains it's generally not very long before the sun comes out again. You could plan your visit to Samui to coincide with Songkran, the water festival. It's a real treat and usually takes place around Easter time. Be prepared to get wet!
There's plenty to do and see on the island - activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, jungle tours and golf. There are several companies offering boat trips out to the spectacular Ang Thong National Marine Park (great for snorkeling) or over to the nearby islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Samui has some lovely waterfalls and temples to visit. The unusual "Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks" on Lamai beach are a major photo opportunity! If relaxing and pampering is what you're after you can visit one of the island's many spas and treat yourself to a wonderful massage or beauty treatment.
There's a vibrant nightlife on Koh Samui and you'll find plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs - especially in the main towns of Chaweng and Lamai. You can go to see one of the famous Thai Ladyboy shows or watch a Thai boxing match. Samui has a variety of banks, cashpoints, dentists, opticians, hospitals etc. There's no shortage of shops selling all the basics and there's even a Tesco.
The locals are mainly Buddhist Thais and they're very welcoming. Thailand is, after all, known as "The Land of Smiles".
Maenam area
The largest and most popular beaches on Samui are Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut and Maenam. Of these Maenam, which is situated in the north of the island, is probably the quietest. It has a good choice of shops, restaurants and bars but you can still get away from it all should you want to as the golden, sandy beach here is several kms long. The waters at Maenam are great for swimming and there are spectacular views of Koh Phangan from the beach.
If you tire of swimming in the pool at the villa or lounging on the white sandy beaches there are some beautiful walks - with beautiful views and you can walk directly from the villa up the hill towards the centre of the island. If you're looking for a bit of excitement, Canopy Adventures, with its exhilarating zip wire ride through the treetops, is within walking distance of White Villa Maenam. The ride finishes by a waterfall where you can cool off and enjoy a well-earned drink.
Maenam village retains much of its Thai flavour and a trip to the local morning market will give you a real taste of local life. There are several shops in the village to buy your holiday souvenirs. There's a good choice of spas in Maenam - most of the hotels have one or you could opt for one of the more intimate local salons for that all-important Thai massage. You can, of course, get a massage on the beach, in the shade, listening to the gentle lapping of the sea....
How to get there
The beautiful Thai island of Koh Samui is just an hour's flight from Bangkok. White Villa Maenam is an easy 20 minute drive from the attractive, new international airport.
Bangkok Airways (www.bangkokair.com) and Thai Airways (www.thaiair.com) offer a wide choice of daily flights to and from Bangkok. You can also fly daily from Samui to Singapore and Hong Kong as well as Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Krabi.
If you prefer to travel by boat Koh Samui has two ferry ports with several ferries every day to and from the mainland.
There are various car hire firms operating on the island including Avis, Hertz and Budget as well as local firms. (Don't forget to drive on the left in Thailand.) Taxis and shared taxis (songthaews) are widely available for getting around and you can also rent jeeps, motorbikes and bicycles.
If you would like to be picked up from the airport or the ferry port just let us know and we will be happy to arrange for someone to meet you and take you straight to the villa.

Further details indoors: The bright and airy open-plan living space has floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the pool on one side and to a sea of coconut palms on the other. The TV, DVD and CD equipment is all in this room. There is plenty of seating including several comfortable Thai cushions. Sliding doors lead out onto the terrace which in turn leads down a couple of steps to the pool terrace.
A wooden staircase leads up to the first floor where you'll find the master bedroom with an extra large double bed, terrace and en suite bathroom with the additional luxury of a second shower - outdoors for al fresco bathing. The second bedroom also has an extra large double bed and opens onto a terrace. The second bathroom is also upstairs, adjacent to this bedroom.
The third bedroom and bathroom are downstairs. Here there are two sets of bunk beds and again the bedroom opens onto a terrace. All bathrooms have hot and cold water, showers and WC's. There are no baths at White Villa Maenam. All the bedrooms are air conditioned. The floors of the house and terraces are tiled throughout. There are blinds at all the windows and black-out blinds in the bedrooms.
If you want to cook at home the kitchen is equipped with a gas hob. Although there is no washing machine in the villa, there are numerous laundries nearby.
Further details outdoors: The large swimming pool is chlorine-free and runs on a Purapool system - clear, soft, clean, odourless water which is so much better for your eyes and skin. The pool measures 4.5m x 9m and is approximately 1.5m deep all the way along. The water flows gently over the sides of the pool creating a calming infinity effect.
White Villa Maenam is surrounded by a private, lush walled garden with tropical flowers, palms and trees. There's a gated parking space for a car. Because the villa is away from the main roads and towards the mountains, there's often a lovely breeze to help keep you cool.
One of the joys of Koh Samui is being able to spend a lot of time outside - and there are five inviting terraces at White Villa Maenam. There is plenty of seating on the terraces and sun loungers for relaxing by the pool.
