The Madrid region

The capital of Spain, established in 1562 as an administrative centre (not a sea port or river or border town!) in the centre of the country, has been a magnet to people from all corners of Spain since its founding and in recent years has drawn people from all corners of the world. The city vibrates on its own epicentre as a meeting place, a melting pot of Spain's many regions, and a centre of culture and nightlife.
A compact downtown area allows for walking to all major points of interest within 5-30 minutes of any downtown location. However, the subway system is amongst the world's most extensive and all-serving, not to mention newest.
Winters can be gray and rainy, cold and clammy, but also sunny and brisk. Daytime temperatures average 5-10 throughout the winter and 25-35 throughout the summer. Spring and fall are often short and erratic. There is a saying, which translated means "MADRID, 9 months of winter and 3 months of HELL". It stays cold-cool and then gets hot all of a sudden. If you catch some true spring or autumn weather you are lucky!

The Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Modern Art Museum, and Thyssen-Bornemisza private collection. Royal Palace, Bull Ring, Retiro Park, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Teatro Royal Opera House, as well as boutique and department store shopping throughout the city.

Arriving in Madrid after a long and delayed flight from Johannesburg we were pretty exhausted when we arrived on the doorstep of the Roof Top Nest. Tom had sent his helper to meet us and in no time at all he carried our luggage up to the apartment. It was a very hot day and we were delighted to find some ice cold water and plenty of ice in the refrigerator. The apartment is well equipped and unbelievably quiet and cool. The views over the Madrid roof tops are enchanting. The five flights of stairs are not nearly as daunting as one would imagine and we found the peaks into the central courtyard quite fascinating. The apartment is very centrally located and within walking distance of most museums, a number of metro stations and many small little restaurants. We could not have wished for a more comfortable place to stay. |

From the outset Tom who manages the place was amazing! Hints, tips, lightning fast responses and an all out attempt to make the arrival and visit to Madrid painless and rewarding. Once we arrived Tom was away with a group so he had his friend meet us there instead and while our Spanish was terrible we got into the apartment easily enough. As per the website the apartment is by no means large but accommodated my wife and I snugly with everything we needed. We stayed here for a week and enjoyed ourselves immensely with local markets just up the road (literally up the street), supermarket nearby and transport at the bottom of the street. The apartment is also within walking distance to parks, shopping and we ended up walking everywhere in Madrid. I would highly reccommend the apartment for it's price and the service offered by Tom. |

I had a very pleasant stayed in the apartment for 2 weeks at the start of June. I found Thomas the owner more than helpful from the moment I booked the apartment. He was away on my arrived but had organized someone to meet me. I was very impressed as he carried my luggage up the 5 flights of stairs. The apartment is well equipped with all I need for my 2 weeks. I was able to cook most meals, a great money saver! It is only a 10 minute walk from the train station, metro is also very close. It is close to shops and a supermarket just down the road. I had no problem walking to most places of interest. Great location, great little flat, thanks Thomas |

The best of city life in Madrid, January, 2011: Eddie L. (USA)
My wife and I spent an incredible few days in Madrid at this flat! Having traveled for almost 3 weeks with another couple, we were ready for some privacy and a relaxing, fun time in Madrid when we arrived! And we got just that at Tom’s flat!
Let me say at the onset that when we rented this lovely flat in the heart of Madrid, we did not expect to find such a great owner. Tom is most definitely the most thoughtful, kind and caring host that we have encountered in all of our rentals across Europe, making a stay at this flat a very special experience. The flat has lovely roof top views, lots of privacy and quiet even while you live in the heart of a vibrant city. Fantastic tapas, beautiful walks, interesting bars and some of the friendliest people in all of Europe are all within walking distance… as are many interesting sights in Madrid!
The flat is well stocked but we have to admit that we much enjoyed the bars and restaurants in the area and did not cook a lot. BUT, we found the high speed internet connection and local telephone very useful in booking a last minute flamenco concert, within walking distance and on New Years night! And Tom was always available for any questions or tips via a quick email or phone call.
The flat was ideal sized for the two of us but may be a bit tight for four. We found the stairs to be a good way to work off the tapas and wine! We have already decided we would like to visit Madrid and stay at Tom’s flat again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
We had a splendid week in Madrid. The roof top nest is just the perfect location to explore the city and surroundings. It had all we needed. We used metro, bus, train and... our feet! Thanks to your tips and the internet in the apartment we did all the sightseeing we wanted to do and had our share of tapas and cañas. Stella & Frans (Holland) October 2009.
Thanks Tom for the loan of your comfortable apartment over the New Year holiday. It was a perfect base to explore Madrid and close to Atocha station for our trips to Toledo and Segovia. Thanks also for the recommendations for local bars - loved the tostas at Melos!! It was warm and comfortable and great to have the internet and TV for those lazy siesta afternoons. -- Heather and Brett (UK)
New Year in madrid, Enero, 2008
We discovered Madrid in 4 days. thanks to Mr. Tom Ferguson, we started our trip with good suggestions. he gave us (spontaneous) a lot of information. we were also glad to have some suggestions to go out in local restaurants, to eat tapas, drink a good glass of wine... During our stay in the apartment, it was possible to contact the owner for further information. The apartment is rather small (for 4 people), but it is sufficient (and clean !). the relation price-comfort is fair. Thanks Tom ! Thierry en Hilde Degruyter, (Belgium)
Rest, after a long day shopping, sight seeing or a night out is assured in this clean and quiet apartment. The air-conditioning in both rooms kept us cool on hot days and the DVD’s, CD’s cable TV und internet connection kept us entertained when we stayed at home.
Yes home! This cosy apartment became our home within a short space of time. The modern appliances: large refrigerator, ceramic cooker, washing machine, microwave oven, toaster, water heater etc. made it easier for us to feel at home, leaving us relaxed and refreshed each new day for exploring Madrid … Yong-Hee (Germany)
