The Madrid region

The capital of Spain, established in 1562 as an administrative centre (not a sea port or river or border town!) in the centre of the country, has been a magnet to people from all corners of Spain since its founding and in recent years has drawn people from all corners of the world. The city vibrates on its own epicentre as a meeting place, melting pot of Spain's many regions, and centre of culture and nightlife.

A compact downtown area allows for walking to all major areas of interest within 5-30 minutes of any downtown location. However, the subway system is amongst the world's most extensive and all-serving, not to mention newest.

Winters can be gray and rainy, cold and clammy, but also sunny and brisk. Daytime temperatures average 5-10 throughout the winter and 25-35 throughout the summer. Spring and fall are often short and erratic. There is a saying, which translated means "MADRID, 9 months of winter and 3 months of HELL". It stays cold-cool and then gets hot all of a sudden. If you catch some true spring or autumn weather you are lucky!

Guestbook

Thanks Tom for the loan of your comfortable apartment over the New Year holiday. It was a perfect base to explore Madrid and close to Atocha station for our trips to Toledo and Segovia. Thanks also for the recomendations for local bars - loved the tostas at Melos!! It was warm and comfortable and great to have the internet and TV for those lazy siesta afternoons. -- Heather and Brett (UK)

New Year in madrid, Enero, 2008
We discovered Madrid in 4 days. thanks to Mr. Tom Ferguson, we started our trip with good suggestions. he gave us (spontaneous) a lot of information. we were also glad to have some suggestions to go out in local restaurants, to eat tapas, drink a good glass of wine... During our stay in the apartment, it was possible to contact the owner for further information. The apartment is rather small (for 4 people), but it is sufficient (and clean !). the relation price-comfort is fair. Thanks Tom ! Thierry en Hilde Degruyter, (Belgium)

In the heart of Madrid, high above the vibrancy of Spanish city life, nested in the almost unnatural tranquillity of the rooftop landscape of the city, lays Tom’s apartment.

I met Tom at Anton Martin, the metro station nearest to the apartment, where he was waiting to pick me up. This was a wonderful gesture, which was quite welcome but did not altogether quite surprise me as he had proved himself to be friendly, thoughtful and very much informed as regards life and living in Madrid.

Not only had he responded promptly to my emails but did so with concise and competent answers and suggestions including the best route from the airport to the apartment. This helpfulness continued in an unobtrusive manner throughout our stay in Madrid. Contact with Tom was made easy by the cell phone he placed at our disposal.

The apartment in Madrid’s centre renders the need for public transportation almost redundant. Parks, Museums, historic districts, bars, restaurants and nightclubs are in the vicinity. Shopping precincts of diverse types, cash machines, grocery stores and a supermarket are within easy reach.

Rest, after a long day shopping, sight seeing or a night out is assured in this clean and quiet apartment. The air-conditioning in both rooms kept us cool on hot days and the DVD’s, CD’s cable TV und internet connection kept us entertained when we stayed at home.

Yes home! This cosy apartment became our home within a short space of time. The modern appliances: large refrigerator, ceramic cooker, washing machine, microwave oven, toaster, water heater etc. made it easier for us to feel at home, leaving us relaxed and refreshed each new day for exploring Madrid … Yong-Hee (Germany)
