Starting at the famous Puerta del Sol and heading either north to the Gran V?a or east to the Plaza de Cibeles, the centre of Madrid hums with people at all hours of the day and night. The enormous Puerta del Sol is at the very heart of the capital, and has been used as the city?s traditional meeting spot for both locals and visitors alike for centuries. The busy streets that radiate out from Sol?s centre are all the beginnings of the roads that will eventually lead you to Spain?s other major cities ? each of the country?s six national roads has its humble origins at Kilometre Cero, right in front of the Casa de Correos clock tower. Sol is also home to the statue of the Bear and the Berry Tree, the official emblem of Madrid, and normally surrounded by tourists trying to take photographs.
